They aren't 'dead on the inside' - don't worry. The green is this year's new growth. The brown is just older growth in which the stems have become woody. Leaves need light and on the inside of woody shrubs they don't get much so the plant concentrates on the outer foliage. That is why trimming a shrub into a tight meatball usually means no leaves anywhere except the outside. You have planted at the hottest time of year so it is not surprising the leaves have suffered slightly and lost a bit of their green. They look pretty good to me considering the time of transplant.

transplant shock.. which is minor if its just interior .... caused by planting in the wrong season .... in my MI.. i would have held the pots for fall planting.. in full bright shade ...

and if the sun hots that brick ... you might be scorching the leaves with retained heat into the night .... the ones in the last pic against the wall ...

its planted at least 4 feet too close to the house ... see link for potential ... if you have space ... move it in fall ... if not.. start boning up on pruning ...

just keep it properly watered.. as long as the growth tips stay fine.. you are rather close to being fine ....

I'm in Canada, we live zone 6, I bought them from a greenhouse and planted them in early may which was early spring here. How would you recommend trimming them next year to prevent browning on the inside? I do water regularly and cut the dead branches off as well.

In a zone 6 would moving it further away from the foundation in fall be ok or should I wait until spring?

I was misled by your statement 'I just planted' which sounds recent. But if you did it in May that is not a problem. The plant actually looks OK to me.
