Need help planting/pruning blood orange tree

My mom has a bunch of citrus trees in pots in her yard that she has taken very poor care of and I'd like to plant them in my yard. I brought home a tarocco blood orange tree today that I would like to put in the ground. It appears to have many dead branches and there seem to be all kinds of roots sticking up out of the soil (see photos). This leaves me several questions...

1. Do I just cut off the dead looking branches? Is there any time of year to do this or anything else I should know?

2. How deep should I bury this tree? Are the roots supposed to look like this? I know burying a tree too deep can cause problems, but this doesn't look right either.

3. Is there anything special to do as I plant it to help it succeed?
