Notice the rope in photo 3 that could hoist the quilt up and out of the way when needed. I love that ingenuity. And I have slippers just like the woman holding the quilt out on her arm. Too funny.

How did they attach the quilt to the boards when quilting. Nail it on temporarily? I really enjoyed these pics. Thanks for the link, Beth.

Maybe there was a border of scrim or other heavy fabric nailed or stapled to the boards, then the quilt was pinned on with safety pins or basted on?

I'll ask my older sisters!! The one who lives in Vermont still belongs to a Ladies Sewing Circle and they still use wooden frames. Matter of fact, in summers past, my two sisters have moved the frame to the floor of the haybarn because they needed the space. Of course, you have to quilt fast before more hay needs to be put in!! I seem to recall that they clamp the quilts, but I am certainly not sure.

I have my grandmother's old frame. She had a small leader nailed to the board and basted the fabric to that. It has long since disappeared, but would be easy enough to replace.
