I think it's better to make a sandwich. That way you learn what tension adjustments you need to make to get a nice, even stitch. The machine will have more resistance with the thicker sandwich so it will feel different than just one layer.

You can bind your practice sandwich and give it to your dog or cat to sleep on, or donate it to an animal shelter or vet if you don't have a pet. :)

I would make a sandwich. I keep some scrap pieces laying around for just such purpose. You can practice patterns or designs, then like Donna said, bind and let the fur babies have it.

I wish my practice pieces were worth of that!! So far, I've just been stitching on top of stitches just to get a feel of the way the machine moves. I'm getting better at meandering :-)

I do that, too. My dog has never complained about the wild quilting on her pieces. And I don't feel bad if something happens to them and I have to throw them out.
