Any ideas on how to update this brick feature wall?

Are you planning on keeping the floor and furniture the same color they currently are? If so, I would maybe try a warm paint.

I would add a beefy mantel in wood that matches the bookcase. The white walls, white chair, and rug all clash with the warm brick colors.

More thinking: dry wall over the side wall and maybe part of the top; add a mantel ; change the surround ( bigger and probably black). The rug and the white chair do not coordinate with the brick. The cabinetry to the left does echo one of the colors in the brick. After painting our natural brick floor to ceiling fireplace (years ago) I'm sorry we did.

We just purchased this house and plan to renovate! The furniture in the picture is not mine. We plan to remove the wall to the left of the fireplace ( to open the space to the kitchen) as well as the shelving to expose the brick. I like the idea of the brick wall as it is exposed completely around to the other side of the room but the brick color isn't very attractive. Because we are removing the wall we will have to refinish the flooring. So we are going to change the floor Color.

You may wish to wait to decide about your fireplace after your remodel. Once your wall is down & your floor color has changed you will be closer to deciding the color to paint your bricks & the style of mantle for your fireplace. Take your time, it takes awhile to get the feel for your home after you are in it for at least 6 months. Congratulations on your lovely home!

This is a more realistic photo of the brick wall! As you can see by the second photo the brick is also exposed on the other side of the wall, running up to the second floor as well as the basement, so if we change the brick color it will involve an enormous amount of work. I like the idea of building a wood mantel to feature the fireplace!

HI -- This brick looks like the molded slices and not full real brick . If you like the look then stay with it and up-date it with wider trims and adding a reclaimed mantel or a cast iron mantel or a barn beam . But if you do not like the look of this sort of brick , then paint it . Easy to do with a sprayer and using masonry paint . To accent it find one big item -- old signage or an Architectural piece like a farm wind turbine . Copper is back to being a popular home decor accent again .

We also left our built-ins as the natural wood color and it makes them pop a little like I would suggest doing with yours

HI -- If you paint the brick ... paint the bookcase too .

The "brick" may be tiles because it doesn't have the coloration of real brick in the close-up photo....too mottled within each piece. Is there any leftover from this installation in the garage? If it is not real brick, there is nothing wrong with painting it. The wall still needs a heavy, long mantel, but consider the proportions of the fireplace when deciding how large and long the mantel should be. Fixer Upper features painted brick interiors and exteriors, and it always looks beautiful no matter what color Joanna chooses.

Corrine Chappell, cozy room! Let us help you to make this wall more appealing! Our decorative stone can be glue over and it's fire-resistant, water-resistant and would match your style! Moreover, it's DIY and would cost you as same as paint!
