Sofa back on the big wall. Coffee table as before. Loves eat across from the sofa. 16" between each. Ottoman, L Ed off sofa or love seat or just at either end. Not on angled wall trying to be a chair. Larger lamps, lg rug then pull colors from that. Maybe textured or patterned drape panels hung wide. You need texture. Your tables match and so do your sofas. Remove small things on either side of tv, wrong scale.

Jamie- I thought it might help if I did a layout for you because a picture is worth a thousand words. See below.

I don't have exact measurements, so I just used the photos you posted and guessed a bit about things. First, we want to "define" the space. So, we do that by placing furniture so it does that work of walls we don't have. (challenge of open floor plans) You have the large sofa across in the right position, but it needs to be closer to fireplace wall. There is another mystery piece of furniture that I have said is an "ottoman". It is against a wall with pillows? I put that in front of the fireplace. Extra seating, but you don't need it because you have the coffee table. To what you have, I have added two things. A large square end table to finish the corner between the love seat and the large sofa. I have added a sofa table behind the long sofa, which gives you another spot to put a lamp if the room needs more night lighting. You can snake the cord under the sofa and under the corner end table to a plug so you don't have wire across a walking area. This sofa table defines a nice space as you come into the room from what I think is a hall and entry area? Then I put the two end tables you already have on either end of the "L' shaped furniture arrangement. The one near the fireplace end has a lamp. As has been stated, you need much beefier lamps because the ones you have are not big enough to balance your large sofa and love seat. See if this makes sense and we can help further with details.

Now as for a rug. With this arrangement, I have noted approximately a 8x10' rug. You can do the blue tape on the floor once you are happy with furniture arrangement to get approx. size before you shop for one. That always helps. With the color that shows on my screen, it looks like your furniture fabrics are medium browns, golds and beige tones. So, that means you need accents in the "warm" color side of the color wheel. Or blue/reds (burgundy), golds, black could work too. The "artwork" spot is above the love seat. You can see that having a layout helps a lot because with the love seat on that wall, your artwork size gets defined. I guessed at sizes of furniture (loveseat 64"wide x 40" deep and sofa 96"wide x 40" deep. If you could measure the length of the wall from the TV wall, to the end toward the entry that measurement would be very helpful. I have guessed in the drawing that it is 21' long and from that corner (TV wall left side corner) to the other side of the door, at 15' So see if that is anywhere near close. I can fix the drawing and make sure what I gave you will indeed work! Thanks!

I don't know what your "style" exactly is, but I am guessing kind of mix between modern and traditional. Called "transitional". I am posting some rugs for you to consider, to help you get a feel for style and colors. This could go a couple of ways I think. First, there is a lot of "black" on that fireplace wall, so by repeating that it will help tone it down and integrate it into your look, so I would get a rug that is fairly neutral, but has some black. Black is neutral too. Here are some examples.

A bit more modern, but carries the black, taupe and beige them. Would sit well on your floor because their isn't a "directional" issue. Some rugs must sit a certain way to make the pattern make sense. Another more modern choice. Might be a bit much, but a pattern of some kind in a modern twist is the idea. Still a bit modern but neutral enough it could work. Of course, all rugs have to be tried in your space with your light conditions and to ensure colors work together. This is a more traditional choice, with the colors of your sofas and brings in the black. Neutral enough that this would work. Of course, budget comes into play as well. So, choices to be made.This kind of walks the line between traditional and modern and brings in the blacks. With some pillows on the sofa and some black accessories, this could work well. Then the artwork could bring in those and other colors as well. Just small doses. Don't want too many different colors going on.

Here are some artwork pieces. Of course, artwork is very personal, so you would have to find that right one, but just trying to give you the "process". Rug first, then artwork.

This would go above the love seat. Dark browns to talk to the blacks in the room and browns to speak to sofas. Not matchy matchy but coordinated.Another horse type that is nice.

You get the idea. Of course, there are many combinations. Suggest you look around in Houzz and save pictures of "looks" you like in an idea book. Then after a bit you can go back and see which ones really stand out to you.

You could also take it in a blue and gold direction. Lots of options here.

I love this one! But pretty bold. Would be fun though.

really appreciate everyone's help with the tough unsolved decisions on one thing I'm not good with I'm not decorating it's been this way for 8 years . and all the suggestions and ideas I have really been helpful just stuck stuck on the accent colors . I've been looking for rugs and pillows still unsure of what color I should go with

I think you may be feeling overwhelmed by your choices. Maybe start with one thing, say the rug. Don't worry about art work, pillows, etc. Once you decide on the rug, you can use that to pull colors from for your other things like pillows and art work. If you feel better starting with the art first, do that and then pull colors from that for your other things. If you try to work on everything all at once, it can get to be to much, lol. Just a thought.

P.S. Art can really define your style ( does not have to be expensive), pick something you really love, not just like and let that guide you. You would be surprised how art can tie everything together, it will help with everything else in the room.

You need to go to Pier 1, Home Goods, Pottery Barn and any other stores that have tons of accessories, and bring home some pillows in orange, yellow, blue, green, turquoise, and also bring home some artwork, then put it around to determine what color you should go with. You have such a neutral color scheme thus far, that you can go in any direction. You of course, will be taking back the accessories that do not work, this is just to get a color or two.

This is a great space to work with. You have a good neutral wall color and and furniture to work with. I would use a large bold rug to start with to add some color. This rug has some great yellows and blues to work with and would even match the teal piece you have on your side table. Check out these colorful and fun throw pillows to add to the sofas for more color and a touch of personality. And I would add a large canvas wall art to the open wall above the sofa. Just a few decorations with some bold coordinating colors could really transform this room.

Lamps are nice, but they look silver? That is a cool color. You need art work, or a rug with color that you can pull colors from for accessories like lamps and pillows. What everdebz is offering thru her pillows is examples of colors that would work with your gold beige sofas. So wait on lamps. You might decide to do colors that won't work with the accessories. This is a process and we can guide you through it. But we need you to get focused on major items first. Give feedback on colors you are drawn to and then we can help further. I know you are trying, and I don't want to discourage you but just trust us. We have experience and we won't steer you wrong. We want you to have a room you love and is better than you could have achieved alone.

Jamie, lamps and pillows come last. You need art and a rug first so you'll have something to coordinate your lamps and pillows with.

If you can't make a decision, try a black and white rug.

Then any piece of art you love will work and you can coordinate pillows with that.

I was thinking along that line too groveraxle. But I'm thinking black and stone/not pure white. Too much other warm colors on floor and sofas. Know what I mean?

I went 2 places yesterday looking fur rugs I'm liking the yellow mustard and turquoise color didn't find a rug when looking for a ride if I'm doing turquoise and the yellow and the walls are grey the couch is beige do I need to make sure I have all of those colors in that rug

Yay, Jamie. Now we're getting somewhere. You've chosen a color palette, and no, you don't have to have all those colors in a rug. Flo and Grover - you two are fantastic the way you just jump in and help someone like Jamie who is struggling. Please take their advice, Jamie, they will absolutely give you the best room possible. If this was my room, I'd be choosing the teal/yellow color scheme. Can't wait to see how this unfolds. ;-))

I love the idea of turquoise and some form of yellow/gold. Let's start with rug. First, avoid rugs with fiber called Viscose. It is very delicate and doesn't clean easily at all. Second. Put blue painter tape (get from Home Depot or Lowes or paint stores). It has low sticky factor so it won't hurt your floors. Put a mark about 6" under the front legs of your two sofa pieces. Then put a mark on the outer edges where furniture will stop. Measure the distance across and length. That will give you size rug to be looking for. I am going to guess for now you need at least 9' x 12'. I will be back to post some ideas.

Is this too much color for you? It has the teal/turquoise and golds.

I'm not recommending this particular rug, but just trying to focus in on the colors you like. It would also help, and I know this is sensitive, but about how much money are you comfortable spending on this rug? That would help narrow the field of choices too. Say a range 300-$1,000?

Very good, that is really helpful. Rugs are hard, so it takes testing, and some patience. Don't get flustered at all, because you have to take some home, check them out in your light, with your furniture, etc. What a rug looks like in a store can look entirely different in your light. That is why I like the idea of finding a store near you because it makes "testing" a bit easier. Just make sure you can return any rug you are "testing out".

Popcorn jute rug from Pier 1, $459:Alvarez rug in mineral from Crate & Barrel, $1300:All pillows from Pier 1, $5 - $35.

Don't forget the art. It's at least as important as the rug.

I have used the Crate and Barrel Alverez Mineral rug. (Shown above). It is a very nice choice. Wool blend which is good. Once you measure you might be able to use the smaller size to stay close to your budget.

Do you have a Bed Bath and Beyond near you. I have used a rug from there that has worked out well. Might go on line and check out their area rugs. If you find one you like, then you can call store and see if they have one the size you want. Or you could take a smaller one out for testing then return if you like, and order size you want.

Jamie, I live in SC as well. Pretty close to Charleston. So in the spirit of keeping our southern pride in mind, let me pass on what I learned nine years ago after moving here from MD: Y'all is the singular of the slang and "all y'all" is the plural. LOL. You're lucky to have some great stores in Charleston.

I have been searching, and I must admit, getting a rug to fit your space in that price range, that is worth the money, is tough. I haven't looked in the store lately, but I assume you have a Bed Bath and Beyond and I have seen some pretty good ones there too. But you will have to just get out there and look. One thing, as I have mentioned, to make it a bit easier, is to see if you can get "smaller" rugs same as rug you would like bigger, and take that home (easier to lug and return) and that way you can try several from one trip. The bigger rugs are really hard to handle, get into your vehicle, drag out, lay out, etc. You get the picture. So, just give it a try. Look at the "materials" in the rug. Avoid "Viscose". Can't clean it, very delicate and I spent a lot on one myself, and found out the hard way. Google "rugs" and read about the various materials. Wool is most durable, but of course, most expensive. And go from there.

a nice and fairly large living space.
i love the tall ceilings. though there are some architectural elements you might need to work around,heres few things you could do to bring more liveliness and personality to your space.
1. create a conversational area. i see you have two large sofas and two side tables. both positioned against wall .

change this position and bring it closer creating a walkway between the wall and the sofa towards the dining niche.

2 separate the layouts with area rugs.
look for something bolder with geometric prints or go exotic. bring in color. navy blues,teal.
3 pick up ur accent colours. play around with colour in fabrics like throw pillows. try different textures and try to pull some grouping with the area rugs. chocolate browns turquoise and greys will work good for ur furniture
4 add window treatments.
opt for floor to ceiling curtains on the windows (note to extend the curtains on either side of Windows than stopping at the window) choose fabrics that has a decent sheen and finish. something with silk or saying mix. bring in a strip or a pattern of colour that u could pull from the area rugs or throw pillows or paintings.
5 paintings.
if you are good with art make your own art. pick up the colour palette and try to bring most of the colours from the living area into it. in your case there is grey, browns and whites (use an accent colour along with these) . keep in mind to use a large painting. something that is similar to the length of the sofa

6 fillers
you would need some fillers like some wall decor (photo frames, 3d pieces, sculptures). go cheap on there. pick up frames and decors at dollars store and insert some interesting monochrome prints.
alternative, use a framed fabric with interesting prints.
7 now with most done finalise how you are gonna display. you can find out cheaper floating shelves which could add a little more finesse while displaying.
8. mirrors!!!!!
nothing is as good as mirror when it comes to mirrors. i mean big mirrors (you have good size walls to hang bigger mirrors)

9 last but not least.
lighting!!!!!
no matter what you do, the lighting bring life into your design. choose wisely on placements of paintings mirrors and furniture. cos your lighting will be based on these.
accent light the wall decors according to which one you want to speak out.
create layers of lighting.
you could remove that existing smaller wall scone to your dining nook (i could only see a fraction of it)
use large size wall scones on the wall you have sofa and coffee table now.
use the lamp shades with the conversational setting. add chandelier above the coffee table (you need a bigger coffee table and more symmetrical one. you have the space for about 3-4ft size. get a good one. go mirror top if you prefer )
use the dining nook wisely and create a semi transition or semi Private area using sheer fabric. hang a chandelier about the dining area.

candles!!! what's design without some natural lighting. open up those windows instead if keeping it closed :)

oops forgot to add. planters and Flowers are must. :) bring some outdoor indoor. yes the Windows need to be opened :)

First, all of you have helped Jamie completely transform her room. Can't wait to see the finished room. I have a question re rugs. I want a rug under my round/oblong dining table, do I need to use a rectangular rug? I've also been told to pull all chairs out as if we just finished dinner then measure, correct? Thank you!!!

lvpersall - you should start your own dilemma with photos of your room and table. The choice of rug shape depends on other factors in the room. Size is always at least 4' larger than the table top unless that would make the rug run into baseboards or furniture on the walls.
