peel and stick tiles

Any experience with metallic peel and stick tiles? I saw the on a backsplash at a big box store, and it's the look I'd like on the wall behind my cooktop. But I'm a little concerned about botching the installation!

I was going to say, I'd be more concerned that they'd melt.

Thanks Raven and Bride, These are metal, have instructions about distances from heat source, so I think they're okay if I follow the directions.

Seem to be carried by DIY stores.

I have a friend who used these for backsplash both behind the sink and behind the range. Her husband installed them and I was shocked at how good they looked...then a couple months passed and they started falling off the wall. He spent lot of time trying to do a quality install but it did not last at all...not a quality product.

I'll bet this is an instance of installer error, not manufacturing defect. If the walls are properly prepared, the tiles shouldn't fail.

That's possible Joseph, and although I don't know for absolute certain in this case, I do know his work in other instances. He is an experienced DIY'er and typically does quality work. I didn't see the prep work that went into the installation so I can't say 100%.

If they are too close to the heat source, the tile glue will fail, and the tile WILL take a high dive. Right into your chili pot. In splat-tacular fashion.

Personal experience, Sophie? Thanks for the warning!

Any appliance close enough to a wall to induce glue failure is improperly installed.

My sister put peel and stick tile (not the metallic ones you linked to) in as her backsplash about 3 yrs ago. She got them at Home Depot and she loves them. They look great btw. She put them up herself and is no DIY expert.

I used peel & stick Smart Tiles on the backsplash in my old house. It was very easy to install them and they looked great. When I sold the house, they had been in place for about 3 years without any issues at all (even the ones by the gas range).

Yay! Thanks for sharing your real-life experience.

My mom had some years ago! Don't know what company, but they held up very well and looked great. In fact, she'd love to do it again : )

I used some peel & stick (different brand) for my kitchen backsplash as a temporary solution while saving for a kitchen remodel. That was 5 years ago and they're still holding strong; no tile failure. We're finally moving forward with the aforementioned remodel and have to say, those tiles are a bear to get off!
