Yes -- you can add any color you like to the island base -- with or without painting the doors, too, and without painting any other cabinets -- in order to make the room more appealing to you -- it's your space, make it suit your taste.

A muted black to compliment the counter top could work as could a bold color -- such as a bold dark burgundy or emerald green or cobalt blue -- or any shade of your own favorite color, especially if it melds well with art or other furnishings in or visible from the room.

That is the strangest looking kitchen I've ever seen. Is that the cook top at the edge of the island?? Or where is the stove?? Yes, you can paint the island a different color than anything else in the kitchen, but I would say you need to address the gaping holes underneath both of those upper cabinets before I would worry about painting the island.

To address your question, if you want to paint the island I would paint the entire thing the same color (doors included).

You could also paint the cart holding the coffee maker.

I'm confused about the door portion of the question as well. I think if you paint the island you need to paint the cabinet doors on the island. I'd also paint the cart. Annie Sloan paint worked well for me.

Price it right, declutter, and clean it, rather than doing anything like painting any cabinets. It has some pretty unusual and dysfunctional layout choices that may rear their head during price negotiations. So you may want to factor in a "remodeling allowance" into your selling price. The next owner will likely want to do a full remodel before moving in. Good luck!

If you're selling I'd probably not paint the island, the new owners may want to put their personal touch on it. I would however take the mirrors off the doors. Good luck and congratulations on your new property.

Your room has too much going on already. . . don't add paint.

If you are selling I wouldn't paint. Maybe add cabinets or drawers to open areas around the perimeter that are under cabinets; for instance your microwave area. A potential buyer might find those vacant areas confusing.

Your kitchen had a very unusual layout. Since you are selling, I would say don't paint anything let the buyer decide what they want. Half-baked 'updates' to sell make the buyer very angry when they have to be fixed.....Ask me how I know??!!

I would have to agree that painting isn't the answer here. I would buy cabinets for the vacant spots.

I would also get a couple of realtors walk thru and let you know what you should be focusing on. If they suggested a half backed paint on your island and put large vases and vacant spots, then don't hire them.

Is the dishwasher next to the stove? If so, you might want to move it to the sink area. I agree you should add cabinets to the empty areas. Potential buyers will wonder what they should do to those areas. Have a cabinet company build new to match the ones that are there already. Then paint all the cabinets white, along with the trim around doors. That will appeal to most buyers and will move your kitchen from a head scratcher to a quick sell.

If you have an experienced realtor, ask for an opinion, based on comparable sales in your market area. Pictures of kitchens in your market area, found through realtor provided portal on a metrolist-type site, or on Trulia or Willow could point you in the right direction. Houses in my neighborhood, for example, could have newly-remodeled or builder grade kitchens. The price points reflect this difference, but all are selling quickly, no matter the faulty areas. Know your neighborhood and area comps.

With the new information that you are going to sell, I would not paint the island. Let the new owner decide what to do. The layout is odd but it would not stop me from buying the house if I liked the rest of it and the location.

Some have mentioned adding cabinets; I would not do that either. If the walls in the entire house are due for a painting, that would be a good idea. Otherwise, do not put money into the house. How is the market in your area?

The multiple recessed areas are what bother me the most. They look like they'd make great pull out pantries, but you also have three sets of bi-fold doors, one of which must already be a pantry. If the side walls of the recesses could be eliminated and the floor space opened up, I'd find it more appealing, but that's expensive to do. What is the room we see through the door in your last photo? I gather from the pix that the kitchen may have a vaulted ceiling and walls that stop part way up. Paint is not going to fix these issues or the poor layout and non-existent work triangle.

The room thru the sliding glass doors is a solarium. One comment thought they were mirrors. Nope. It is a vaulted kitchen with sky lights in the kitchen and living room including vaulted solarium. One bifold door is pantry and other two are cubboards floor to ceiling include the cubboard above the coffee roll in. Funny have lived in this residence and have not had problems having a non existent work triange. Did not realize how having somone's home torn apart would bother me so much so please no more comments. I can figure out the rest. Thanks!

Sometimes it takes a hard shell to deal with the frank comments of Houzzers. If you weren't selling they might have been softer, since we'd be wanting you to be happy in your own home. However, when you're taking your home to the market, we want you to get the most $$$$$$ for it, and that is a different ballgame. It isn't personal but is for your bottom line to benefit. You still have the last word in every case. Looks like you've opted out of our help. I hope your realtor is more savvy about staged presentation than most I've dealt with. Best wishes!

Just trying to help. Sorry the comments were too harsh, but it might better to get the hard truth served cold now, rather than later when buyers let you know by not putting in offers. It's always better to get another person's perspective. If the functionality of this kitchen is rather good, then it just doesn't photography well perhaps. Just curious, did you ever find a use for the voids below the cabinets while living their? I wish you well on your sell and new home.

I would find the cooktop on the edge of the island off putting too. Certainly I'd be wanting a lot of money off the price to rectify it. I'd be thinking of that whether you paint or not. Function before form.

Welcome people giving you honest and frank feedback if you're selling. I've felt confronted by prospective buyers comments long after it was too late in the schedule and budget to rectify them. There was not a Houzz then.

I think the type of painted cabinets is very individual. I would hate to have inherited those dark blue chalk painted cabinets, seen in that video, but that might be just me. The stuff is expensive, hard upkeep, and has a very specific look which reads DIY shabby chic. I fiddled with the idea at first, but chose traditional cabinet alkyd paint and method for my kitchen refresh. Better to get a outdated functional kitchen, than a quickly painted kitchen for resale. I remember one lady here saying she painted all of her cabinets in one day for resale. I doubt they looked good or lasted.

Yes, she does say the colour is discontinued. The video is for the method. There's no sanding needed.
