Dishwasher advice

Hoping the collective expertise here can help us. We are becoming overwhelmed trying to shop for a new dishwasher. Our current washer is an approximately 8-year old Whirlpool, and the control panel has gone bad. (The home warranty people tried to replace it with a refurbished, discontinued Maytag, that we could not see in person. We said "No thanks" and took the payout instead.)

We are not looking for something super fancy. We mostly want something that won't break down and cleans the dishes. We don't need sleek, nor stainless steel fronts (actually prefer white). They guy at Lowes recommends a stainless steel tub to help with drying.

We are looking at the Maytag MDB8959SFH because it seems a little sturdier than the other Maytag we looked at (MDB4949SDH), which the guy at Lowe's owns and likes. (But I like the silverwear rack of that one better.) The Maytag seems like it might fit our plates better than the current version of our Whirlpool.

I'm worried about a couple things - the location of the vent (We don't see one on the front, and the guy at Lowes seems to think it vents into the cabinets, which seems like a very bad idea in humid southeast Virginia; it also recommends some sort of optional moisture barrier for the counter that makes me wonder if it is a problem). The second thing is that I read somewhere that there was some sort of class action suit (in CA?) against Maytag regarding the control panels frying out from moisture. Oh - also worried we won't be able to see the controls under the countertop?

(I know Consumer Reports says Bosch is the most reliable, and they have an affordable option but I see so many complaints about American dishes not fitting that we don't want to go that route.)

So we've become paralyzed, analyzing things to death. Hopefully someone here might be able to set us straight regarding these concerns?

Thanks Kris. We looked at it, and the tines were very close togther. We did try our dishes in the Whirlpool and Maytag - the Maytag with wider spaced tines fit the bowls better (the bowls are very deep, with somewhat vertical sides). But since we plan on bringing some more dishes to try to be sure of our choice, we can try the Bosch then. Of course, if we go to replace the dishes someday, it will narrow our options. I'll have to look at where it vents as well. Also, I read in a few places about Bosch machines smelling?

I'm also very happy with my new Bosch. It doesn't have a vent and it doesn't smell.

Check out reviews on Maytag by owners here and at Amazon.com. There are many problems people are reporting; like control panel failures and wheels coming of the racks. I have an old Maytag and they were built like tanks, but that is not the case any more. Don't know what to recommend at your price point. I know that the only Bosches with adjustable tines on more than one rack are the high end Benchmarks and they cost about $1400.

Lowes sells a geat Bosch that I would have bought if I hadn't needed a panel ready model (was selling for $1079 -- don't know if that's in your range, but it would be very quiet and have most features you could want on it). The one I got is pretty similar in the features other than finish. I am still learning how to best load the third rack configuration (have run it about 4 times), but I am very happy with how quiet it is and how well it cleans.

That isn't true about the adjustable tines on more than one rack. There are adjustable tines on top and bottom starting at least in the 800 series if not the 500 (I had a chart I found online that compareed all the models, but I can't find it again). The every-other tine fold down on part of the lower rack tines is something that is only offered on the Benchmark 9 and the Thermador Star Sapphire (I could be wrong about the Sapphire, but I think it is only the very top model in each line).

There are also two different size tubs in the Bosch DWs. As I had it explained to me, the tall tub or Euro tub is the one in the Benchmark 9 and has a 14 place setting capacity. The Deep Tall Tub is the one with a 15 or 16 place setting capacity and the tines. The tub and the overall DW dimensions are 1-2 inches deeper than the other styles. The salesman called that the American tub and said the tines are spaced more widely apart.

I was dead set on a Bosch Benchmark dishwasher. Then I was offered too good of a price on a Jenn Aire to pass up. The Jenn Aire cleans everything and you could not ask for a more quiet unit. That said if I was shopping I would focus on the following more than a brand. To me 42db, a 3rd rack, and interior lights signify a winner.

My last dishwasher had interior lights. The Jenn Aire does not. I am surprised how much I miss them and what a difference they make.

My Bosch Benchmark has the interior light. It was one thing I didn't think I cared about. Haven't had it a month yet, so not sure if it will spoil me, but its interesting that you miss it.

Regarding bowls in a Bosch -- or any DW really. We have some deeper bowls that we sometimes load standing between the tines and sometimes turned 90 degrees between the rows of the tines. I am still learning how to load this new one, but I think part of the rack and tine thing is being willing to try different ways of making things fit. Sometimes you have to forget what you have been used to doing and try something else. The upper and third rack are an addjustment on this one. It holds a lot, but not the same way the old one did.
