When your dinnerware doesn't include serving pieces ...

I've ordered new Mikasa dishes as shown in the first photo and in the mock-up below. Mikasa does not, however, make any serving pieces in this pattern so I'm going to have to flesh out the dining table with non-matching vegetable bowls, platter(s), etc. I don't need many pieces but do want to have a few that look nice with the dishes for whenever we have a more formal, sit-down meal with guests.

I'm starting with serving bowls. I've looked a good deal online and like the four pictured below. Of these, which (if any) would be your choice to use on the table with the dishes? I'll probably buy two, and then start in on my platter search. (I've also included my flatware in the mock-up, which is a fairly simple hammered design. It doesn't bother me to have different metallics.) If you think I should look at any style/color of bowl, please say.

I've also included a photo of my dining space, which is open to the kitchen and living areas (what the heck, I'll post those too for anyone who doesn't know what my "look" is). I'm aiming for an eclectic, slightly artsy/slightly southwestern vibe. (And yes, the paper towels have been moved to an unobtrusive location on a side counter. ;-))

Bowl #1 is glass, and the others are ceramic or ceramic/metallic (#4, by Nambe).

First choice is #3 based on the pictures.

Would any of the Fiesta shades of blue or brown coordinate?

#3 may be the winner. It's stoneware, and at $19.99 definitely affordable. At 10" it's a nice size too.

I had considered the Peacock Fiesta vegetable bowl, but I think it's just a little off color-wise. And to be honest, I'm just a little tired of Fiesta. I've had it for years.

    Another vote for #3

    Number 3

#1 You have blue elsewhere in the room as well and I think it would be a nice tie-in.

I like #1 for the same reasons stated by blfenton.

    I like one & three.

I like three. I like one as well, but it seems like it is kind of see-through and I'm not sure I would like the way it looks with food in it. Plus it looks a little "airy" for the dinnerware, if that makes any sense.

But #3 looks like a perfect match.

    I like three.

Get 1 and 3! They don't have to match.

Number 1 for the salad bowl, and number 3 for vegetables. Having metal lining and trim on a bowl full of hot food (#4) might transfer heat and burn finger tips in passing. Can you find a cute patterned dish to coordinate, too?

I vote #3 because I think most food would look best in it. I love blue in every form but it doesn't seem the most complementary/appetizing color with food.

    #3. #1 seems to airy.

3 and 1. Love the Mikasa!

Take a look on etsy, or any pottery shop in your area, and have some custom made for you. Here is one example found on etsy, but I have also seen patterns impressed on the outside of bowls. These are microwave, oven, dishwasher safe, and can be custom made. If you find someone in town, you could match the colors.

    I agree - 1 & 3

I like 1 and 3 -- and was wondering about using Fiesta, but if you are tired of it......

I always like clear glass bowls for fruit and salads, and I have a smaller oval one I have used as a small vegetable dish, among other things.

I agree with asking a potter to make some custom sized pieces that match your dishes. Then you could have little fruit bowls, covered vegetable bowls, bowls with handles or with a decorative element that is special to you.

I love #2 for uneven shape and color, and #3 for simplicity -it's probably best for mixing salads. and I would definitely go on Etsy to treasure hunt there. Plenty of amazing ceramics. I went as far as ordering a sugar bowl from Bulgaria..)) My favorite sugar bowl ever.

But also arts and crafts festivals in your area, and pottery shops-great things to find there too.

    PS Love your art!

Another who likes 1 & 3. I also don't think the serving bowls have to match. You could use a wooden or glass bowl, for example, for serving salads. Consider what items you would likely be serving and the sizes needed and go from there. I find I only need 1-2 vegetable bowls and sometimes use my more 'vintage' white Corning or something else that will hold the heat well instead of a more delicate serving piece.

I agree with the posters about hand crafted pottery.

Food seems to look better in solid, lighter colors - like the cream color in your dishes Although, a wooden salad bowl would be nice too.

All my serving pieces are different, collected over many years. Mainly pottery or glass, some enamelware and a couple of great wood bowls.

Thank you all so much for the input. I really like the thought of artisan-created pieces so I think what I will do is delay purchasing any serving dishes until we go out to Santa Fe this fall. I have a feeling I'm going to find tons of things I want to bring home with me (although this is a hiking holiday, not a shopping trip), but this will give me something definite to hone in on and if I don't find anything, I can always continue the search back home.

My advice.... buy only one or two pieces. Restrain yourself! You can get cheap glass bowls anywhere. Use those as needed, and then let the search be very very selective. Buy what you love, but not more than one piece at a time/source. It makes the chase much more fun!

I love the chase! And it always gives you something to do when you travel. And, then each piece has a story you can tell over dinner.

Late but I vote for #1. You can send me 2 of #4 though. Love Nambe.
