Local conditions and locally sourced/available materials probably drives what most people use.

I use a garden soil modified with pine bark, perlite, and small lava rock. One could use any of the materials you have listed although I would recommend a very coarse sand if any.

Mine change based on price. The big thing is to think with perlite or some other additive to create drainage. I have used a variety of different products mixed with a healthy amount of perlite in the mix.

Something that retains water but allows for a ton of air to get to the roots & is @ the appropriate ph.
