My niece's friend had a little pup (I think a chihuahua) swooped up from their yard and taken by hawk. Please don't take a chance with your little dogs. Keep them on a leash, and/or stay with them at all times when they are outside.

Those are very cute dogs and I think you are very wise to be scared. I agree with Cat Mom, I'd keep them on a leash and close when outside. If you want them to be leash free so they can run and play, maybe you can invest in an enclosed playpen with a cover. I don't know how big this one is, but the concept is what I think would keep your puppies safe.

A top cover is a must to protect toy breeds from birds. Currently I take my Chorkie out on a leash. Our back yard is fenced in, she was always allowed to run around the yard while I sat and watched or did yard work, but last year when the big bird almost got her that ended. I feel so bad for her as she wants to run and romp and chase the squirrels. By the way even if your toy is on a leash your baby needs you within a few feet as the birds will still try to take them and can cause serious and fatal injury in the blink of an eye.
