I've seen pendant lights in homes with high ceilings.

The rods or chains on my pendants would have to be 5 feet long to bring the lights as close to the countertops as the old pot lights. Does that sound reasonable?

Just select lights carefully so you get adequate lengths of chain. Yes. It is done. Might look for something a bit funky in design that hangs from say two cables so it compensates for drop.

Here is one example. You do have to specific your ceiling height with your lighting source, so the proper length is ordered. This might not be your new style, but gives you idea of what can be done. I'll post a few more.Notice these have fairly large shades. This is what we call "scale", so design, scale and overall look of space all factors into your choice.Just another example. So, have fun with it and bring some "joy" into your space. Lighting is the most overlooked design feature in homes, and it is EVERYTHING in terms of your overall look, feel, and function. Good luck.

Any length is fine,: ) just remember if you are mounting on a pitched ceiling, chain is the simplest, and any solid stemmed pendant may mean a connector allowing that, and a customization of the stem so they are level above the island. Not a big deal in most cases. Many will offer the option for installation, and a threader tool will often resolve the stem issue regarding length.
