Under potting

Went to the craft store for some cheap teeny terracotta pots.

I realized that i tend to choose pot size relative to plant size, preferring to slightly underpot vs 'just right'.

When i repotted new acquisitions the last couple of weeks, i just used whatever little plastic 2" nursery pots i had set aside.

In re-potting, i've found that the clay pots, of apparently the same size, height & diameter, holds about 1/3 less potting medium.

Of course you can see why here :) not a view i usually look at these things from, lol.

Going with all wee terracotta pots from now on & recycle the old plastic ones ;)

I bought a bunch of wee terracotta pots at the craft store last week. I'm dying of the squeeeeee seeing teeny little plants in teeny little pots haha!

Renee, love those pots!!! I have yet to find wee saucers, as well. For now I am just dripping dry, tap on paper towel and returning them to the sill.

    Those are adorable Renee!!!

Bunk, I know what you mean, they're so darn cuuuute, lol!!!

I've found saucers at the craft store, but just like everywhere else, they are at least double the cost of the corresponding pots.

    =S

    What's up with that?

I happened to go to Ikea and they had these window sill sized ceramic trays, looks like this click me

Mine is white though and I bought it about a year ago....not sure if they still have them in stores.

Anyhow, I group them together on larger trays because I'm clumsy and always need something to collect the spilled mix. Trying to keep the place somewhat tidy is a challenge =)

I keep a small dustpan with brush click me, I got it at Fairway. I can sweep up the mess right away and store it in the little dustpan to re-distribute to all those who are missing some of their mix due to gravity.

I just can't believe I didn't realize the plastic nursery pot counterparts held so much more mix. No wonder I had some cuttings pout and throw temper tantrums in there =/ dropping leaves and looking all over-watered in what is the equivalent of rocks!

I don't use bark or turface (or equivalent) in most of my pots.

Well dang - I'm going to Ikea today. I'll look for those trays.

I just vacuumed my sill because I'm also clumsy and have mix everywhere. My daughter says she is going to have to start wearing shoes inside because she's tired of stepping on rocks :O

Just an FYI - Old Time Pottery carries the small clay pots and they also have the saucers to match. I know they are primarily in the SE, but maybe some of y'all have a store nearby. 19 cents a pot, I think.

There is a Cajun restaurant we like near by. They serve little flower pots of M&Ms at the end of the meals. So I asked them where the heck they got those little pots. Hubby was afraid I was going to put them in my purse! LOL

I also use these things, pardon my messy place n_n and photo bombing rare miniature smooth coated husky, aka Spydey the chihuahua.

Got it at walmart for under 10$ i believe. Emptied it of spices, which is what i originally bought it for

As you can see, didn't get around to taking label off yet. Good thing cause these will be great when it's time to break out the lights when winter rolls around.

Love the look of those tiny pots. I recycled jar lids as saucers for the tiny pots, LOL, that's if you are not too worried about aesthetic.

Frank - get out a can of spray paint if you don't like the look! I've just about become the Krylon Queen lately. LOL (It helps large plastic pots withstand the Florida sun, so I have fun and make wild designs.)

Joann Fabrics sells different tiny pots with saucers for pretty cheap in the floral department. They have tall tiny pots too, for plants with deep roots that don't need lots of mix.

Like Frank, I recycle plastic lids for this use. Not so concerned w/ aesthetics, since having damaged most of my window sills, I learned better for the furniture. Some pints of ice cream have plastic lids, I've collected them in white, forest green (nice w/ 3" green pots), gold & brown, so one of those colors often works w/ whatever color pot.

For those using terra cotta saucers, I'd be concerned about moisture absorption from the planted pots & also perhaps the saucer sweating moisture to the surface underneath.

I collect Hoyas & use lots of humidity trays for them w/ Iids & pebbles that works really well.

I also use plastic deli containers as trays under groups of smaller pots of succulents. I've even scarfed up some old copier trays through the years w/ which I've lined my plant shelves.

Hooki, your plants looks so neat & tidy & almost picture perfect!

    haha =D Thanks Kara!

Amynoacids, I forgot all about Joann's!!! We have one pretty close by, I'll have to go scope it out.

I just got back from Walmart and those clear acrylic stadium shelves were under 7$ each. I bought a few more to help organize the wee pots and it's a good thing too, cause I feel a trip to Joann's coming on =D

Karen, they look neat because I'm transitioning from outside to in. So the reassessing of pot choices and repotting is neat and tidy now, but after a few weeks, things get kind of crazy looking.

My plan is to try to keep things as organized as Old Stumpy's green room! Attempting to keep a steely resolve this year.
