I think basically any shade of yellow would work. It has to be something bold tho to fit w the mid century ranch look imo

These ides are all really great. I do like the red but it unfortunately doesn't look very good with any of my furniture :) everything I own is grey! Maybe a muted red or the habanero color would be a better fit. But the large scale art look is something I'm going to look into also.

I think the lighting fixture is original. It's the only original lighting fixture in the house everything else is updated so keeping it might be cool too.

Grover that is very cool! I thought I would love a grey wall. The wood on the stairs is a very warm almost orange tone. Does it have to match? I don't know anything about what matches a warm tones coppery wood.

lwiding, when I painted the red wall, I discovered that the back wall (on my monitor, at least) has green undertones. So I matched it. But I would probably repaint everything a warmer tone.

The light over the stair looks like it could very well be original so you might want to keep it and UN-update the other lighting instead. If this house is very MCM, I'd totally try to restore it to its roots.

Couldn't agree more with flopsycat1 and groveraxle (two of some of my most favorite Houzzers :) with regards to keeping the light fixture.

Your mirror doesn't do much for the space, I'm afraid, or at the very least should be centered on the wall. I love the idea of a Nelson clock (nod to groveraxle), but the Ball Clock might be a tad too small for your wall. Sorry, groveraxle :)! It's only 13" in diameter. I own four of Nelson's clocks and they are fantastic! Really iconic pieces.

Also, I'm really curious to see what you end up doing with your stair wall. I have a pretty large stair wall (similar to yours, but I'm not painting it) myself and I've been considering either an original museum banner (as groveraxle posted) or a vintage cloth/tapestry. www.betterwall.com sells original museum banners that were previously displayed on the streets. How cool is that? They might be a little too narrow, so have to think of proportions. At the same time, I'm really drawn to some of the vintage cloths that I have seen recently, so...I can't decide at the moment, still thinking :).

Grass cloth could work. The 70's wallpapers are probably a little out there for you. Agree that the entrance is a little dark- I'd add wall washers.

Hamma, Betterwall's museum banners are tres expensive. A lot of museums sell their own banners for $50 -75.

I like the idea of a wallpaper! I'm also going to check out the banner idea too. We're about three weeks from moving into this house so I'm trying to get a jump on the interior. Thanks for all the great ideas everyone!

Wallpaper would be fantastic.

What a great space! Please don't remove the light. Not only does it look original to the house - or at least the era it was built in - those light fixtures are totally of the moment again.

groveraxle, I've seen museum banners on eBay too!

BetterWall is not inexpensive, for sure......They say that they only sell banners that are in excellent condition, whereas some of the museum sites I've looked at state something in the line of "expect some weathering and wear". Perhaps they are just trying to be realistic about it. I mean, they've all been *used*, right? I personally wouldn't know unless someone buys them and reviews them :).

In this post by the co-founder of BetterWall on Apartment Therapy, he goes on to explain how they operate and the reasons behind the costs. I.e. they seem to be the only company in the USA that keeps the street museum banners out of landfills and recycles them in a special way, they share profits with the museums, etc.

I think a bold large black patterned wallpaper would be amazing! And keep the original lighting....no art necessary...it would Create a beautiful focal point.

I've been looking at wallpaper but one of the print seem big enough they all seem like it will look too repetitive. I'm going to start looking in the black and grey colors! I love the ones you picked.

You could try something in a few bold colors, maybe one of these from our designs?

One thing you could add to the wall after adding the bold black wallpaper is a large starburst mirror...just a thought:)

Cost and labour of wallpaper on that large wall will be quite extensive. I don't think anyone has mentioned going with white, staining your railings the same color as the beams and add a MCM chair in the corner and some fun posters on the large wall + a more interesting rug - for a modern uptake on MCM.

Love the sputnik chandelier or keep the one up there. If you change the fixture do sell it, it's worth some money.

I really like the idea of an all white wall. The house is very dark feeling with the wood floors and ceilings. I'm going to look into a white color maybe with a slight metallic. Very subtle.

It think it will be eye catching, bright and modern. Good luck, but be careful with a metallic...test it out first.

If you do decide on a black and white wallpaper...I would paint out the ceiling between beams and all other surrounding walls white...only wallpaper accent wall....keep all trim, doors and means a deep colored stain.

Yes if looking at metallic paint be aware it shows every imperfection on your walls.

I like the red wall, but I like red. The house is nice, reminds me of the house on The Brady Bunch. I would paint the feature wall charcoal gray. Enjoy yourself and good luck with your fun project!

I think white will look wonderful. Not so sure about the metallic paint though. If you're after a shimmer, perhaps a metallic decoration could work. A plain white wall will give you the perfect backdrop for whatever decoration you like, be it a banner or a metallic piece, and if you feel like a change, it will be a lot easier just hanging something else than painting that whole wall again.

Quite a coincidence, but I was just thinking about your dilemma/wall and was wondering what you ended up doing and meant to post on here and ask you. So, there you are :)! I've been under a non-decorating rock of sorts :), as my baby daughter decided to be a champion and is cutting so many new teeth at once! (I didn't have the time to tackle my wall just yet). I'm still pretty much undecided and at the same place where I was previously with regards to my stair wall (i.e. 1. Museum banner 7 feet long 2. Vintage tapestry).
