Suggestions for colors, bed linens to go with this console

This console used to look fabulous in my previous home's entry, not so good in my current home. I thought perhaps I could move it into my guest bedroom as a dresser, but I am really struggling to find colors/bedding that do it justice. Suggestions?

You could always sell it on Craig's List and get something that works for you. It seems to have a lot of orange tones in it on my computer. You might try some kind of wash over the leopard print to neutralize/fade the bright color a bit if you love the piece. If it is deep enough you could use it as a wine/liquor/coffee bar. Maybe the sides flanking the drawers could be opened for tall bottles or a hanging device for cups or glasses.

Deco - The console does have a lot of orange tones in it. I don't love it, but it's small and cute and fits in the guest bedroom, so my first choice is to try to decorate around it, but, alas, if it is too difficult, as you said, there's always Craigslist. I don't really have any other place for it in my new home.

Apple pie - thanks for the link. Helpful.

I had two ideas. One would be a Boho sort of room.

The other idea was a Colonial India sort of look.
Hollywood Regency just came to mind.
It would help to see the furniture that you are using.

That's a tough one. If you don't want to consider painting it, a gold/caramel tone linen would work with it.

What are the other existing guest room furniture pieces you will be working with?

imhofan - there are no other pieces in the room worthy of mention. I have a bedside table and a chair, but they are easily replaced. The bedding is my biggest challenge right now. I'm leaning toward a solid color burnt sienna bedding, similar to torrey's suggestion. Here's a (rough!) photoshopped image of a room I took off the web and added my console and sienna bedding to. Thoughts? I'm going to be needing a headboard, too, but I'm not quite ready for that.

Hi Doctornancy. Just so you know I have absolutely no design experience and reaching out to Houzz to work through my own decor challenges. But I just love that console! Have you thought about it standing on its own and dressing your bedding in an ivory/white with accent/throw pillows, etc., in the sienna/orange color you like? Again, just a thought.

i do not get this. i will be honest animal prints anywhere of any sort are not my thing, though on a chest of drawers is new to me. on the other hand, people are always sticking these animal prints in every room heedless of whether they match? why can't this just go with anything? i always see it as the same as the shoes women would wear the animal print or the silver ones went with whatever you wear?

The colors in it seem to be what would be present, generally, in wood furniture - I would treat it as such, and not try to match bedding or other accessories to those colors. Bring in some more wood furniture, and you should be fine. A jute rug, blue/gray walls, some fresh white trim, and wood bed with white or natural toned linens.

It need not "match" anything!!!. It's no different than an animal print pillow. Mix it with any bedding you like ( linen solids could be lovely, a furry trow for the bed....) and remember you're letting it be the star. Metal based bedside tables with a stone top.... , don't add a ton of wood to the room. It will be fine.

Ditto. You don't need to match the colors in the chest to anything. But I do like the idea of keeping the rest of the room very white. I think it's cute. Perfect for a guest bedroom.

I would blend with soft spun gold bedding and some accent pillows... I love the chest!

I like the chest also. It's different looking; not something you see everyday.

so glad tohear i had the right take on it.

I love the chest and think it could work with so many different looks. Here's one look:

And I love what this blogger has done in her bedroom using a leopard accent:

Thank you everyone. I appreciate all the input. I tried white/cream linens and the chest looked like it had been plopped in the room. It looked like a left-over piece of furniture put in the room because it had no other place to go .... uh, well, that IS what happened! BUT perhaps adding the right pillows, decor, etc will make it look like it belongs. I have a goldy/orangy bedspread on it now and the room is very.... well, goldy/orangy. Imagine that. I'll post pictures of the room with the linens I've tried - in 2 weeks (after my current MESSY guest - my daughter - leaves). In the meantime, continued suggestions are appreciated.

It's the right size to hold a TV. Do you want to build a room around a dated item?

I would not put that piece in a bedroom. that doesn't seem to fit to me. I'd put that in an entry way or a hallway or even a library/office if you had to. I would find another place for it. Or I would paint it to make it more usable. Or I would sell it and buy something that does work.

Bev - we're not tv watchers. Dated item? Perhaps. Bought it two years ago from a high-end furniture store. It's a novel piece, so if I can make it work, I'd like to. If it ends up looking like a left-over just plopped in the room, off to Craigslist it goes.

In the guest room you might wall mount a small TV above it. If needed you can put TV on an articulated arm so it can be adjusted for viewing from the bed or a chair/chaise.

I think that piece is beautiful, unique and just not dated..... Take the picture with you to Bed and Bath; find their coupon for 20% which you can easily get online and also by offering your email address. Go to the sheets section and look for Wamsutta sheets - satin 100% cotton. You will find sheets that have a color that picks one of those in the piece. One commentator suggested golden brown - that i believe is spot on. A brown bed spread (plain) with pillows that have those colors and possibly stripped drapes, with brown back ground and lines with those colors will complete the look. Even plain can do. It will be okay.

I agree with white, but you just can't plop the dresser into any room without adding accessories that work and compliment and incorporate some black - it could be a fun, eclectic room that guests should love. Head towards a modern look vs going with golds and heavy fabrics.

I think you need a fairly large headboard and some other darker pieces for it to tie in nicely

cpaul - No other place in my home for it. Yep, it may not work, but I want to try.

Here are my thoughts so far: keep the console, use ivory bed linens, gold-yellow bed skirt, pops of black accents (eg lamp), rattan/Hemingway/Old world bedside tables, large headboard, chandelier. Here's a collage:

    Thoughts?

If you like an old world look, the combination is fine, but I feel it is a touch dark and heavy - but everyone's taste is different. If you are drawn to it, that's what is most important.

I found a bed but it is over 3k :( but with simple end tables and cream bedding and rug and curtains it could work
  • 9 years ago
DoctorNancy, I think your collages are quite good and everyone who contributed pictures gave so much inspiration. I think the piece is beautiful and if you are creative enough to try working with it, why not go for it? I especially love the black painted doors in the one room and that would be quite dramatic.

I look forward to seeing your before and after photos.

You could accent with red and call it the "Fran Dresser"

I was originally going to suggest red, but there's so much orange it in. Fran would still look great in orange!

How about painting the walls an interesting color like blue to ground the piece a little bit so that it doesn't look like it is just floating in the room? Then you could use white or cream linens to keep it simple and just do some accessorizing with pillows and artwork.

There has to be enough going on AROUND the dresser...........mostly that means linens, art, texture more than "color" !!! You don't just "plop it in". Sorry, the bed wasn't perfectly made, the point is the RUG : ) as "animal" as you can get.

Marytouching - great links. Maureen - thanks for the comment about the "heavy" look. Jan - beautiful bedroom. My updated collage:

Much better : ) I'd lighten ALL the bedding, add no more brown in pillows , and the rusty accent in the lamps is plenty with just the one pillow.

I'd go very light to white on the bed linens. Go a pretty blue color on the walls and have ONE other accent to pull the animal print together to look like it belongs such as a bed pillow. Other furniture can be clean lines without much fuss. I think it will look sophisticated!
