MCM Redo

My parents purchased a bedroom set in the late 50's that included this chest of drawers. The bed is (sadly) long gone and my brother has the dresser (may try and talk him out of it). I finally had it refinished for our son and think it looks great. It's a beautiful warm walnut finish, but the photo reads more red.

Before, with original finish.

That is so pretty. I imagined I was going to see that you'd painted it, because as I was reading, the "red" jumped out at me, but how wonderful that you didn't. So much nicer than the original finish! I hope your son loves it.

He does - especially because it belonged to his grandparents. It really doesn't look so red in real life.

Yes it was missouribound! Sure wish we still had it. And Karenseb, the furniture refinisher polished up the original hardware.

So, Torrey, I don't know if you saw my recent post on redoing my parents' 40s dresser, but may I ask how much you paid to refinish, and what stain? It really looks beautiful.

I had the exact same bedroom set. I bought it with money I saved from babysitting at age 15. (in the 50's) The headboard got broken a few years after I got married ,during a move.. The chest and dresser, family members now have, and the chest has been painted.

Your chest of drawers is beautiful - it looks like it was always meant to have that walnut finish, which is one of my favorites. You have created a family heirloom!

I did see it deeinohio - it is a fabulous set! I paid $450 to have it done (included hardware restoration). I've never refinished furniture and just don't have the time or space to give it a try right now. The shop I used here in Savannah is considered one of the best and is known for working on higher end pieces, so their price may be a bit higher than some. I'm sorry I don't know what the stain color is - I brought a small drawer from another piece we had and ask them to try and get it as close as they could. To me, that was easier than looking at a lot of sample pieces and trying to figure out how it would look. I also ask for a very low-sheen finish. Can't wait to see how your pieces turn out!

Thank you, Torrey. Asking to match stain is a great idea!
