Help me decide, if possible!

To combat the intense tedium and boredom of a summer that just drags on and on, I'm trying to work out an order to place with La Roseraie du Desert. The problem with that nursery is that, when I look at their list, I find myself wanting about 80% or so of their roses, and this year I am trying to LIMIT myself to a reasonable amount of new roses. So here's a tentative list of one dozen roses:

1)Madame C. Ligier

2)Dr. Domingos Pereira

3)Princesse Etienne du Cry

4) Florence Bowers' Pink Tea

5) Clbg. Maman Cochet

6)Indiana Semper

7)L'Arioste

8) Vicomtesse D'Avesne

9) Pennant

10) Souvenir D'Alphonse Lavalee

11)Fineschi "Adam"

12)Ju Purple Noisette

Now, as you can see, I'm a sucker for cool pinks, lilacs, mauves and purples. The last two roses on my list, in fact, are not even on HMF as far as I can tell, and I'm just getting them because of the description of the Fineschi Adam as being lavender, and the Ju Purple Noisette because the name says it's purple! But I guess I'm worried a bit that my selection is too limited, that I'll wind up with several roses which are all too similar amongst themselves. What do you all think? Any suggestions? Comments? I can add one or two more to the list...any suggestions for some blends? I don't like plain yellows or whites or oranges. It's kind of sad; I have a splendid big Crepuscule, but just can't seem to love it! and I'll probably sp my Clementina Carbonieri (a very large plant that I've already moved I think twice, and has ended up in overly poor soil) but these colours, in a blend with, say, a lot of pink or rose or so would be nice.

Bart, just to check, are you looking at their current list, which they send at request? It's considerably different from their online list. Just as desire-inducing, however.

P.S. I'm not familiar with any of the roses on your list except for 'Cl. Maman Cochet'. I have two cutting-grown plants of this, and while it does suffer considerable cane damage it has held out quite well for several years in full sun and wind, unwatered, in poor heavy clay. No doubt it would grow bigger and prettier in kinder conditions, but I rank it a good tough variety.

Thanks, Melissa. Becky sent me a "list of cuttings",but wasn't sure what exactly they had from their online list. I figure I would send her my wish list ,and then she can tell me which ones in the list they actually have...

You all can get so many roses that we can't! But I guess it equals out. Have fun! Lisa

Florence Bowers Pink Tea is a wonderful rose found in CA I believe and very vigorous. Climbing Maman is a wonderful rose. Vicomtess d'Avesne is a rather lackluster grower..The others I haven't grown.

I don't know what size rose you are getting their but imports sit in quarantine here for 2 years before cuttings can be taken. I purchased a gallon of the Vicomtesse, have cared for it diligently for 3 years and have yet to see a bloom. If these roses you are getting are cuttings it is going to take some time to get to a bush.

In my experience I have found that some roses aren't in commerce because they are rather weak. I would add "vigor" to your wishlist for her.

I live in Italy, Susan,so they won't be sitting in quarantine.

AH DUH. I just meant that cuttings taken from a two year old rose (closer to three) were very small still.

Patience, Alana, patience! If I'm not mistaken, "FBPT" should be wending her way back into commerce soon...

It would be nice if RU were to pick it up since Florence Bowers' garden is somewhere near Lexington, I think, and it would seem appropriate for a SC nursery to sell a SC foundling. But I suspect one (or more) of the Florida nurseries will have it first.

But didn't you say you were finally running out of room? ;>)

Yes I am running out of room! But that doesn't stop me..yet :) Thanks for the information. You are so right on both accounts :)

Thanks for your helpful attitude, Virginia! I'll check out Hugo Roller, for sure; I'm not sure of the actual colour of Mme. Julie, but in any case I have a LOT of roses in that colour range already,so considering the need to try to limit myself, maybe it's better that I just give that one a miss(for now...) You know, the Hooks are hoping to move to the USA and start a new nursery there, so that can only be good for rose lovers in the States. So, Alana, keep on keeping on!!! Ironically, several rarities on the list of La Roseraie du Desert are found roses from the USA,and there are many beauties available over there that are not to be found here. Often I search on little-known nurseries'sites for roses that i've heard about from American gardeners on this forum; also, Bierkreek has a few of the Found Roses from the USA. I already have a couple Grandmother's Hats, and am considering Old Town Novato, for example. Grass is always greener, n'est ce pas?

Btw, people; I just noticed that in this post, as in another one of mine, for some reason a couple of words are being evidenced as if they were a link, This is NOT my doing, or my intention; I have no idea why this is happening or what it means.

Bart, I'm cautiously optimistic about the Hooks moving back to the States and opening a nursery on this side of the Pond. I have no idea how many roses they will try to bring over, nor how many of those will survive the process, but I am hopeful that they'll bring many roses not currently available here, and that the survival rate will be high...

I also hope that they find a buyer who can keep the business going; it seems there aren't enough good sources for warm-climate roses in Europe, and I'm guessing at least some of their scarcer offerings are in danger of extinction...

The linking thing is weird; I haven't seen that before. You must have special super cyber-powers (or maybe cyber super-powers?), and I hope you will choose to use them wisely.

LOL, Virginia!!! Might've known it! The ancient Greeks said that if you take something to the extreme, it becomes it's opposite, and I guess this is what is happening here. My cyber-incompetence has become so extreme that now it is morphing into cyber-super-powers!!! Kidding aside, I have found that clicking on links from these forums is very risky: twice I wound up "picking up" something from totally innocent links, posted by totally reliable forum members, that caused problems for my PC. My DH pointed out that these things can happen, without the poster being aware of them; I'd guess it has something to do with Houzz??? so I wanted to make it clear to anyone reading my thread that if by just typing my post I accidently "picked up" something weird, it was NOT done deliberately by me, and if there does appear to be a link, DON'T click on it!

Yes, I am worried about the risk of extinction thing, too. I see that this nursery near Rome that Becky mentioned to Melissa does have many of the Hooks' roses, and La Campanella has some of them, too,so I've tried to include in my list certain ones that it seems that only the Hooks offer (a couple on my list are not on HMF and I've never even seen pictures!) But others are varieties that I've wanted for some time now, and several are ones that I actually did buy a couple years ago, but wound up losing due to the fact that my garden conditions are so harsh, and I didn't have a decent spot at our old house for raising potted-up bare-root/own-root roses up to a size hefty enough to stand up to said conditions. And then there's Jeri here on this forum, subtly enabling and tempting one with her pictures/posts about, say, F Bowers' Pink Tea,Yuki's Dream,lol...
