I'm with you! We have the same situation--almost 15 years and never have taken a bath. If you take out the tub, tile the floor beneath where the tub was and when you sell you can tell the buyer to put in a free-standing tub if they even want one.

No - IF you have another bathroom in the house that has a tub ( for resale). We have a tiny master bath and no tub, but there is a full bath in the hall.

Years ago I removed the only tub in the house, and put in a roll-in shower. A few months ago I sold the condo (it was on the market for 4 days!), and the new owner plans to put a tub back in. If you're going to be in the house for years, do what suits your lifestyle. If you think you're going to sell in a year or two, it's probably better to just keep the tub.

Thanks for all the feedback. With 4.5 bathrooms in the house, this would be the only tub! :-/ We aren't planning to ever sell, but I really hate to make a seriously bad decision in the renovation in case we ever need to! I guess it boils down to more closet space vs. a bath tub...

We don't have either. Never take a bath anyways. Now what we do have is a double shower, that is nice and convenient. Our home is new build. The builders said a lot of people are going without tubs. We do have a tub on bedroom level. Good luck!!

I do think you should have one tub somewhere in the house. If I redo my master bath, I'd remove the tub too, but my other two bathrooms have tubs.

I've designed over a hundred homes and have occasionally not done a tub in the master bath, even in very high priced homes. But from personal experience, after 12 surgeries in the last 10 years, it's nice to have a tub in the house. Hey! You never know what's down the road and surgeons are very down on you getting their work wet.

Any chance of putting a tub in one of the other bathrooms instead?

I could put one in the main floor bedroom bath, but I thought it might be better to have a walk-in shower for when our elderly parents visit. Thoughts on that?

Orangecamera makes an excellent point. If you have 4.5 bathrooms and you don't want a tub in the master or on the main floor what about the other two full baths? I took out the tub in my master w/o any regret, but we have a tub in our other upstairs bath. Also, how big will your master closet be with the tub vs. w/o a tub? A closet doesn't have to be huge if it is well designed and professionally organized.

Personally I don't mind getting rid of the bathtub in favor of a larger shower and closet space.

julestynan, if there's already a walk-in shower on the main level, I would not change it to a tub.

I think losing the tub for a nice shower and more closet space is a great idea. I can count the number of times in the past 8 years we've taken a bath. We are building and made that same choice for a nice size shower with dual shower heads and a seat. I agree that having a tub is good "just in case". Even with a little more closet space, organization is a must. It significantly increases your storage.

How about a large closet with a tub in it? ;)

Actually on a more serious note, you could actually keep the tub, but put a removable cover over it and use it for storage. Keep extra blankets or out-of-season clothes in waterproof plastic bins (to keep out humidity in the bathroom). You'd still have the tub to use if you had a need or desire for a nice long soak.

Haha! I love it! Nothing like thinking outside the box! Seriously, I will talk with our contractor about putting a tub/shower in our boys' jack and "jack" bathroom. Thanks for all the thoughtful advice!

Yes, a tub for the kids' bathroom. That's where it belongs most.

Definitely put the tub in the boys' bathroom. Then you can have a very nice shower in your master and the kids will end up in your bathroom to use it, (making the presence of the tub in their bathroom moot.)

For resale purposes, given a house of that size (I am guessing based on 4.5 baths) it would be a problem to not have no bathtub in the house... but if you are not concerned with resale then go for it and make the house work for you!

We also have 4 bathrooms in the house we recently purchased. I have two small children and for me, it was a big deal to be able to give them baths in their own bathroom, now we redid our master bath and we still put one even if the kids bathroom already had one. If you don't have a bath in that size house, it almost eliminates potential buyers who have small children. I also have a bath tub in the guest bathroom so we have 3 tubs! That I use to bath my dogs. I hope none of my guests finds that out!:)

Many of our clients admit that they don't use the tub in the Master Bathroom (I don't have one in my Master Bathroom.) If that's the case, I suggest not spending money on a tub for the Master, provided there is at least one other tub or tub/shower elsewhere in the home for use by grandkids, guests, and the dogs (Junee G, the secret's out!) Eliminating the cost and space occupied by the unused tub in the Master allows space and money to be spent where it adds value for you.

Not a must unless you like taking baths. Like mentioned before, we built many masters without a tub. It is recommended to have a tub in another bathroom (at least one in the house) you never know when you'd need it.
