We had a bit more success with monarch butterfly eggs this week,
including making a better video of the hatching than we've previously
achieved. On a tripod, we set up a Nikon D3200 with a 75mm bellows macro
lens and electric remote release so that we could get one image every
few seconds. The egg was lit by an LED spotlight (a.k.a. IKEA reading
light) and a fill light, and was placed on a vibration-damped platform
(a.k.a. 1985 Maytag washing machine). I
then edited (one by one!) the images, selecting 104 of them to cover the
12 minutes and 22 seconds from (i) the time when we could see that he'd
begun to chew his way out until (ii) the time when he had cleared the
egg by a full millimeter. I set these up to fade from one to the next,
added simple titling, and saved the result as an MP4 video. I hope you
enjoy it! BTW, we make it freely available for educational use (but do
assert copyright and ask for a credit line).
