What are the green plants and type of large stone pebbles used?

I am looking to replace regular mulch with stones to create a more contemporary look and not have to remulch frequently. I imagine leveling the ground (dirt), laying landscaping fabric and placing the stones on top would suffice, yes? Just one layer since the stones are large?

The stones look sorta like large mexican beach pebbles and then for the plant.....possibly english laurel? Just throwing out some guesses.

Good guess. The stone is Black flat mexican rock, and the plant is Pittosporum.

Yes that would work, since the stones are larger, 3 to 5in in diameter.
