Lipstick advice?

last modified: 10 years ago

Until I turned 60 I was a minimal-to-no makeup person, but lately I've noticed that I look about 1000% better (less washed out and pale) with lipstick. I'm using one by Clinique and love the color (raspberry glace) and the way it feels but realize I have questions such as:'How many times a day do I have to do this?!? Is there an average?' and 'Do I reapply at the table in restaurants?' I know these are things I should have learned as a teenager or by watching friends, but somehow I missed it. Also, is there a way to make this stuff last longer? Thanks!

I reapply after eating or if lips feel dry or It if a quick glance in the mirror tells me it's time. Yes I do it at the table. It seems that most lipstick cases have a reflective, shiny side and I use it as a mirror. Though my fave brand is Butters of London (at ulta) these days it seems all brands are good so it's a matter of what color I feel like wearing.

I'm starting to get back into lipsticks after many years of not wearing it. I'm playing around with cheap lipstick to try out colors. I don't carry lipstick with me so it's applied when I do my make up in the morning and then that's it. I'd like to find an "everyday' color that I would keep a 2nd one in my purse to have when I want to re-apply. I don't see anything wrong with reapplying at a table. Just don't pull out the dental floss ;-)

Same as Bossyvossy, I love lipstick and reapply whenever necessary including at a restaurant table. I keep a small mirror in my purse and use that to quickly touch up. How often depends in part on the type you are using - some are longer lasting. I sometimes "stain" my lips with a little layer of lip pencil underneath and then add the lipstick on top.

Funny, I think of myself as a "what do I care" kinda gal but I would never put on lipstick at a table. I even feel uncomfortable putting it on at my desk, alone.. but I do.

It isn't that I need a mirror-- it's just not something I am comfortable doing in public. In my car? at my desk? in the bathroom? sure.. but out in the open.

I prefer gloss to lipstick and I prefer a nude or very light pink color. I typically wear chanel glossimer or rouge allure gloss. I also like Loreal colour riche and alba gloss.

This is my favorite long lasting lipstick. Personal grooming, including lipstick application, IMHO does not belong at a restaurant table.

I can't remember the last time I wore lipstick, but I do wear a tinted lipgloss daily. I think it brightens my face, my smile and put it on even when just at home. I garden in lipgloss, and haven't dealt with chapped lips in forever. I'll add some if going out in the afternoon, and certainly if leaving in the evening.

Most of my gloss colors are neutral, subtle and nothing strongly hued. I can slip some on at a restaurant table without even taking out a compact/mirror.

My fav is Chanel Levres Scintillantes in any of the nude or neutral tones. I bought one pretty on a friend in Estee, and found it didn't last on my mouth, it was gone after a cup of morning coffee.

I have found lipsticks, when worn daily, to be very drying. I've had better luck with clinique's chubby sticks or almost lipsticks

I seldom apply at restaurants at the table. I do reapply my favorite lipstick 2-3 times during the day when my lips begin to feel dry. I don't find my lipsticks to be drying at all. I think the long-wear types do feel that way though, at least a few that I tried a few years back felt that way.

I really like Burt's Bees. Not as long lasting, I suppose, but they are easy to find. I like to put the main color on first, then soften it by applying one of their paler colors on top.

If I could only have 3 makeup items, it would be mascara, lipstick and perfume. I can have my hair done, all my makeup on but till I apply lipstick/gloss, the look isn't complete. As others have said, I reapply as needed and do so also at the restaurant table. I've never needed a mirror tho <lol> People are in awe. I just tell them I know where my lips are ;) Any time I've ever asked, I'm told it looks perfect.

I adore Cover Girl Outlast - have been using it for over 10 years (if they made it 15 years ago then that's how long?). It really lasts for most of the day. I do reapply perhaps once a day but it really truly lasts. On some other forum, someone suggested the color CANYON (#626) and amazingly it is the most perfect color on me. I try other colors from time to time, but I love this one. I do keep a stash of them on hand because I have been expecting it to be discontinued since I love it so much. It comes with the separate gloss which I never use .COVERGIRL OUTLAST LIP COLOR

Thanks everyone. These are all great suggestions, and I'm going to try them out. I love the lipstick I'm using, but it does last less than an hour on me. So I was reapplying constantly! Thanks again.

I like the Clinique Chubby sticks too. I used to use Clinique lipsticks including the color you mention but switched after I got a stick sample. Not quite sure why I like them better.

Haha - where do you think it goes, hmmm? I have to have something on my lips all the time, they get so dry, but I was taught it is bad manners to apply makeup (or file one's nails) @ the table. Mostly because it is a rather intimate activity, I guess, & may upset other diners' sensibilities...? I always excuse myself & go to the ladies' room to touch up makeup, etc.

I prefer the no phthalate, no parabens, no etc. types of makeups, esp. lipsticks/glosses, since you are basically eating them.

I prefer stains or tints. I'm on the last of my Origins Rain & Shine (liptint with SPF). Went to reorder the other day only to discover it's been discontinued.

I remember being so embarrassed when my mom would reapply lipstick in a restaurant. Even as an adult it bothered me.

Haha Carolb, I have no idea where it goes! It's not on napkins or glasses or coffee mugs. It seems to just seep into the lips or evaporate into the air!

First you buy "long lasting lipstick" , Clinique is not one. Reapply as often as necessary and no never re-apply in front of anyone. Maybelline has one that dries to a matte/suede and will last 4 hours. This all from DD #1. I myself never wear the stuff. I gave up years ago--I have no lips.

If you make aure your lips are well conditioned, slough off dry skin and fill as well as line your lips with pencil lipstick stays looking good longer. Reapply as necessary but never at the table.

It's rude to apply lipstick in the privacy of your own table in a restaurant but it's OK to yammer on the phone and let your phone ring and bother people in the restaurant? *smh* I don't give a flip if the etiquette police say it's not OK to apply lipstick at the table, I've done this my entire life and I'm not about to stop now. I do not, however, blab on my cell phone in the restaurant.

Indigo, you didn't ask about lipstick brands, but within brands, I think some last longer than others. A long time ago I wore a lot of Clinique & raspberry glacé was a color I recall. I also remember it didn't last long. My go-to color now is Uber Beige by Bobbi Brown. It's a matte pink brown, not much darker than my own lips. I also line my lips with a slightly darker shade but only slightly, and it lasts most of the morning. I also have a couple of glosses (Nude) I can stick in my pocket for a quick shine & it lasts pretty good too.

I've used some lipsticks that feel almost like wax or otherwise "stiff". Maybe those are the long lasting ones. I couldn't stand the feeling. I'd rather reapply Clinique. And I guess those are the ones that don't come off on your stemware.

The Emily Post Institute says the following:

"May I reapply lipstick in the presence of others?

In general, personal grooming should be done in private. But putting on lipstick without using a mirror and without fanfare is one grooming ritual that can sometimes be performed in front of others. It’s okay to quickly apply lipstick at the table if you’re with close friends or relatives in a non-business situation, and at a non-deluxe restaurant. Skip anything that involves the use of wands, pencils, or lipstick brushes, though. And when in doubt, don’t do it, such as when you’re at a business meal or with people you don’t know very well."

I certainly agree that discretely and quickly adding a little lipstick is perfectly acceptable and not offensive - and is in no way comparable to nail filing, sloppy eating, loud phone calls etc. Each to their own;)
