Drought care

I have a large sugar maple in my yard - easily 60+ feet tall so it's really old (New England). These past two years it's struggled with winter moths and now, a major drought. I know the tree is old and established but I can't help but feel like it needs water. So I dumped my entire rain barrel of water at its base (probably 30 gallons of water). Then I read it's better to water it along the drip line...did I essentially waste the water? Am a doing more harm than good? We've gotten 3 inches of rain since June! Thanks for any advice!
