Changing the house around
Soooo yes my some day has come and I have been working so hard to get the two rooms switched one for the other and painting one while I am at it. The change is my old guest room will be moved into my old studio . Part of studio has been moved to the living room and over flow studio will go into old tiny guest room. When a person has wall to wall furniture all lined up it is difficult to make drastic moves like this and paint while I am at it.
The futon I used for guest room bed and sitting space when no guests were which is most of the time is leaving. It will not fit in the new guest room as I need it to even though it is smaller as a couch than a full sized bed but making it transition to the bed in the space is a wash out.
Neighbor needed a smaller couch and place for grand kids to sleep. Futon will work for both. They have a nice mattress and box in full size. I still have my lovely full size vintage bed frame. The trade will be made this morning. Yes the full sized bed will take up more space all the time but there is still lots of room in the larger room for this.
At this time I can not go one step further until the futon is moved out of the way. This will open up a hole for me to move the old commode out of the old guest room and into my now pretty walk in closet. Then I can move a shelf that holds my glass bits into the new storage studio room and just keep trading one piece for another as I work my way around both rooms.
Painting is also halted until I can expose more wall. All hinges on moving the futon and that one glass shelf. No photos. It is way too awful to even envision my plan. I have it all worked out on graph paper. It fits I just need to get it done.
This is day three physically working on it.Two walls except a corner where the hoosier is are painted the new. I have the rod to hang the curtains in the closet opening in the new guest room. Need to cut it of course. Going to use the conduit for the rod as the curtains I will be hanging are heavy.
So several pieces of furniture and dozens of boxes of glass need to be moved to storage room and some I do not use often out to a shelf in the shop. Then finish painting the room and I fear I will run out of paint so leaving around the door entrance for last as nothing will need to be moved there to finish paint after I make another trip to town. I do not want to be on the highway today or tomorrow.
I also managed to make this move with out having to move two large cabinets. Very happy about this. Since the tops of both are display I will just switch top contents from one room to the other. And the large cabinet in the room I am painting is about 6 inches out from the wall so I can even get painted behind it with out moving it. I just need to move the safety bracket keeping it from falling over in earth quake. But I do not think I will even bother with that. The screws are holding well now and I do not want to weaken that hold in any way. I will keep some touch up paint. If needed for that at another time.

When are they coming to get the futon? Sounds like you have been busy, but for some reason, my back hurts just thinking about what you're doing. Take care and take pix when it's done. ;)

Shades- Well done! Not very often, but occasionally, I have been known to paint around a large piece of furniture. When I finally move it, I repaint the room : )
So excited to see the finished spaces! I am really looking forward to seeing the walk-in closet and the new bed.
I'm working on the dining room, today. And organizing my desk....but that will probably be a larger project than I care to admit! LOL

Original Author10 years agoThis is not a good sign. I am already taking a break and feeling exhausted and I have not even lifted the paint brush yet. Many loads out to the shop for easy access storage I will organize later. That helped. There are several loads of stuff on my storage shelves I need to move that will head to the shop. Now it is all mine I am going to use those empty shelves. It was totally Joe's shop except for my loft out there and I respected his wishes to keep my crap out of his space.
The futon is gone and mattress and box spring into the room leaning against the wall. I have to shuffle even more stuff up in the loft to get the bed frame down. I will probably have to rope it down over the side. I do not think I can carry it down the stairs. We left a gate to open to do this. Well Joe did. I also moved the shelf I painted last night into the new storage room using dolly and skid rug. So glad I painted it. Looks so much better. White of course. A shelf way up high is hung and out of the way. Next comes moving my studio storage shelf to the new room. That is going to be really a long process. If I do not get to painting today then oh well. I am not going to beat myself up more than I have to to get this done.
I also have the commode moved to my walk in closet. Need to paint two shelf brackets. They were hidden behind the book case but really show now. I am Cleaning all along the way with vacuum and floor scrubber so once an area is done it is also nice and clean.
Back to it.

Me, too; ladies. One step forward and two steps back. I need a heavy-duty, diesel-powered shoehorn.

Original Author10 years agoImhappy I actually referred my moving this time around exactly the same way this morning. And it is how it is going. There is no way to just move it all.
I am give out and never even touched the paint brush yet today. I plan on taking a nap and maybe I will catch a second wind later after I am rested. Right now my body is screaming at me from all directions. Even my elbow is so sore I can not lift my glass of tea. This makes me rather useless. I do not remember any pain in my elbow during the day.
The book cases are both moved and the little one foot cubbies that are three high in a stack and I stacked two up. Lots more stuff out to the shop. It is only 35 foot away from the house but boxes of tile and china get pretty heavy in that distance. I would have loaded up the wheelbarrow but it is down hill to the shop and I would be afraid it would get away from me. so far the new working studio storage room is turning out as planned.
Next I need to clean the floor where the shelves and cubbies were in the old studio so I am not grinding glass into the floor. I am sure there are some small bits that came off my glass shelves. Then I can move just a couple more things and get to painting. But not now. I need rest. Progress.
A few issues like how to hang the tension rod when I have nothing to tension it between now. Sigh. Thinking hold it up with big cup hooks which I do not have. Maybe I have some eye bolts the rod will slip through. Even though it is a storage room I kind of want the shelves covered. I also feel better about it covered with the animals going in there.

Shades, you exhaust me! doing dishes does that too...
there are brackets to hold that tension rod up... they're like a U and fasten onto the inner framework of a doorway and then the 'rod' slides down into them. I need to find a pair myself as my tension rod for the 'shower' curtain between my bedroom and bath keeps sliding down. I've given up on the 'tension' part actually holding... my next trip to HD i'll pick up a pr of those.
I also want to pick up a battery operated light (small) for the inner door area of my laundry room. the light switch in there is on the wall of the exterior door, which means at night I turn off the light and walk in the dark about 8' across to the inner doorway. I'm never sure where the dog is... so I slide my feet so I won't tromp on her paws. I figure one of those little lights are cheap enough not to continue in the dark and chance stepping on her or tripping. It's just getting my body to the HD!

Shades- It's like gardening! It's so exciting to finally get in there and start making the drawings and ideas a reality...it's too easy to over work. Take care of yourself and take breaks. And drink lots of water!

Original Author10 years agoYep it is easy to over do. I did get the first coat of paint on the corner ,where Hoosier was sitting ans no way to move it at that time and across one 13 foot wall and around the corner another 5 foot to the other cabinet that sits out from the wall with brackets to keep it from tipping over. I painted the second coat on all of this this morning and even behind the tall out from the wall cabinet. I need to do above it but I AM running out of paint. If I can get the second coat done behind the cabinet then I can put furniture back in place and paint above it and in the room entrance after I buy another gallon of paint. Nothing will need to be moved then. Except what is on top of the tall cabinet. Two picknic baskets I use for storage. Right now I do not want even ONE MORE THING in my way so they are staying put even if I did have enough paint. I am out of room to put things.
Still wondering how I am going to get hoosier and cutting table out of old studio and sewing table into new guest room. There is one big bottle neck going on.
Right now I am heading out to work on getting the bed frame out of the loft and up to the front porch for when I am ready for it. Waiting on paint to dry so best to stay out of that area for now. I am one that would back up into it. Or put my hand into it. DOH on me.
So for sure I am out of here for awhile.
OH Yes Steph I am a worker kind of person. Always have been. I think I create work for myself. Just when I think I am done I get another idea and off I go on another tangent of changing things. Apparently it is my nature.
Be back for tea later. Probably hot tea today.
Shades_of_idaho
Original Author10 years agoDrinking Dragon Fruit tea hot in the cup today. It is chilly outside and after working to get the bed down I feel the need for warmth. IT is so so good. There are little bits of fruit in it dried. Makes me want to pick them out and eat them.
SO the bed frame is down and I was able to get it down the stairs which made me happy. Half an inch taller and it would not have made it. It is still leaning in the living room and rails on the floor. I still need to get the Hoosier and my cutting table moved. I need to finish unloading the cutting table. I brought my last box in so if there is more on it I will have to go to bags. UGH Hope not. The Hoosier has to go into the new room first and unfortunately it is behind the cutting table in the old room. Tried not to let this happen. OH well it did. Cutting table will have to go out first and down the hall to the right while hoosier goes left to the new room. Then bring cutting table back and A Do-Ci-Do you go Swing your partner. OH wait we are not dancing here.
Right now I know when to quit. I am too tired to do the heavy work it is going to take and to push it now could hurt me. I will drink my tea take a hot shower and watch a movie and relax my muscles. The sewing desk and small one file drawer table with printer are moved and in place along with the two sewing machines. I am making progress but I am not singing It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas just yet. Can you tell I am a bit over tired???

Original Author10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoLOL Missouri bound. I do not text here. I know how but not going to do it.
Soooooo Here is a not totaly done but getting close photo of the new guest room. I still need to clean up the closet area and hang curtains in the top of the closet opening back up. I took them down to wash. Not sure of my pictures /mirrors placement. Need to live with it a bit.
The room is hard to photo with out showing the messy closet area. LOL
This is the sewing/office desk . I can set my sewing table up over the trunks when I need to use it.
Second photo looks weird. It is a mirror over the desk. Reflecting a small dresser across the room. Need to sort that one out. LOL I do not notice the reflection in person but the photo sure makes it look weird.
The yard is calling to me. SCREAMING at me get out here we are thirsty. So no more playing with rooms until I get the yard done again. Need to mow too.

I'm packing my bags! I know the "guest room invitation" will arrive by the time I get them out to the car! LOL
That is a seriously beautiful room! I want to see the "other" side, too. Do I see a glimpse of a mosaic-topped dresser - and a lady with lovely garters? Is this your former glass studio room?
I love your jewelry box. I recently sent my great-niece a "refurbished" jewelry box similar to yours. I did not do the work myself (I simply can't take on one more project) but it was darling - as is yours! I was purging my jewelry and decided to let her "inherit" early. Since she had new pieces, I figured she'd need a new place to keep them. She requested "blue." I think this fit the bill.

Original Author10 years agoThank you Sunnysmom and Caroline.
Caroline I love the jewelry box. I added a shelf in the long side and turned it into my sewing box. I keep spools of thread in the drawers. I really like the hardware on your box much better. I did use bobbins for drawer pulls adding a flower bead to the center of them. Pack your bags girl and get here.
I made a huge long list of things to get done today and the only thing left on it is mow the lawns. I am waiting for the sun to go down. This time of the day the sun blinds me. It will not be long. Lots of watering all around the yard, not the lawns. Laid the pavers for my walkway until I ran out. I need four more double pavers as stepping stones on the one end then I will start gathering them for the other side. I only pick them up when I am in Ontario 10 at a time. So next load will finish the one side with two left over. Doing this project went smoother then I thought it wood. So happy about that and the 16 by 16 stepping stones are a good size. It is two 16 by 8 pavers put together.
I thought I bought 4 swing arm plant hangers at the yard sale last weekend but it turns out there were 5 in the stack of them. One was seriously stuck to the back of another. Happy about this as it brings my cost down to 10 cents each. I paid 4 dollars and change EACH for the other 6 I bought several years ago. These are a bit shorter in the arm. That is fine. I made 4 simple macrame hangers. I only had cord for that many. I need to make 2 more. I need 3 more plants to hang. I have starts rooting now. Hoya and ?? Forget the name. I also have small spider plants that will take off shortly and they usually grow like weeds.
What a day. I never got to the closet or the other studio storage room. I really need to sort it before I bring more into it. And Caroline YES the guest room now was my old studio. The studio room is 14 inches wider than the other room was. Same length of 13 foot. So it is 10' 4" by 13 foot. Not counting the closet and little room entry part. A much larger space over all. I really loved the guest room before but always felt the few guests that did come were pretty cramped in there. I will love the extra space for my sewing too. And the smaller room is fine for a over flow storage room for my studio things. I do not think I will mind having to go to this room from my work table in the living room as most of my most used bits of glass are in the old converted gun cabinet. Now if I could only get done with all these changes sorting and organizing so I can start creating again. I have a hallway wall and mannequin that need to be finished and two more torsos in the loft to do.
Chris, your room is wonderful. It is charming and inviting and I want to snuggle in for the weekend right now.
Caroline, I love the jewelry box. And Chris, I never thought of using one for sewing. I have mine stored in the top of the closet because I have too much to go in it. But I never have anywhere to store bobbins and buttons, so when we are moved and I can sort again, I'm going to look into that.

Original Author10 years agoPHEW I am still moving things around working on the guest room closet area now. Moved the furniture piece in there to my bedroom and Joe's dresser into the closet. With extra blankets/bedspreads in it. I love to change my spreads to give a room a whole new look instantly. A bed covers a lot of visual space. I am still not photo worthy but getting closer. Had to sit for a break to relax the muscles in my back. OH my the last three pieces were heavy to move. Good thing I could mostly slide them on the rugs turned rubber side up. Even so very heavy and it was also time for me to eat. REALLY hoping for pictures later this afternoon /evening. People are coming early afternoon so will cut into my time but always nice to see friends. This has been a long long process. I have changed the laundry room living room studio and guest rooms and my walk in closet. And a couple pieces in the master bedroom. I wish I remember what day I started all of this. I will keep it in mine next time I get a whim to change things how long it took and how much work. Almost like moving out and back into the same house. And YES we did that twice!!! So I know how it feels.
Shades, I can't wait to see the photos! How big is your closet that can hold a dresser? That sounds wonderful!
Could your visitors help you move some of the pieces around while they are there? Since they are friends, they would be happy to help.
My tea-drinking, BBC mystery-watching, every-Wednesday guest volunteers to help scooch things around every time she shows up. We're neither all that strong, but we are great at putting our assets to work and nudging items into place with our backsides. I have bits of carpet and/or cardboard under the pieces that are still in flux to make it easier, too. I have those plastic sliders, but once they get scratched up they aren't as easy to use as the carpet.

Original Author10 years agoOK for now I am done enough. I still need to finish painting in the guest room by the doorway . I do not need to move anything to paint there just get it done. Not today. I am still tweaking in the new studio space too but for now good enough. I would like to do the cover up curtains better but quickly worked with what I had to get it all covered. I will sort through my on hand fabrics to see what I can come up with to make that better and I love sewing curtains.
Was a good idea Caroline to have friends help but I have all of the heavy stuff moved now. And the master closet is 5 by 6 or close and the guest room closet is the regular depth and 89 inches wide inside. I had the builder leave out the upper wall on the guest closet so I could use that area as storage. And I also built shelves on the ends of the closet for more storage. Since this was to be my studio I needed/wanted all the storage I could get. Pictures of the storage shelves. The end shelves come right out with no marks to the walls if I decide not to use them.
Upper to the ceiling hidden behind curtains of course. And now this is perfect for my sewing room as the upper shelves are mostly fabrics and things to use for sewing.

Sides behind more curtains.

And the room with curtains hiding all the stuff.
Now the new studio. I need some better lighting in here and it is a dark and gloomy day out side.
The storage side.
The change in the master bedroom. This white cabinet is where hubbies dresser was. One poster is new one is old. Happy to have my poster friend back up.

And finally the latest version of the changed master closet.
In guest room and new studio every piece of furniture but one cabinet in each room has been moved from one room to the other. White cabinet and hubbies dresser and a commode in guest closet all moved this morning. Everything has been totally cleaned during this move so this is wonderful. I have an over the bed rail lamp for the guest bed. I just need to go get it from the loft.
LOL I might still have a rifle in my closet. Whispering I took the spurs off the bed post. Bad Chris Very bad.
Way to go Chris. I am impressed. The guest room looks so inviting. And who doesn't love an organized studio space?
LOL
The rooms look amazing! I love all the purple, but the storage is wonderful!!! And the mirror, lamp and dresser in the closet....love those!
Everything looks so nice. The white dresser and your posters, the bed (that new bed is lovely) and again more purple! Did you paint the (is that a Hoosier?) in the studio? Very pretty : )
Not whispering! LOL WHY would you take the spurs off the bed post???
I love, love, love your rooms. Do you realize you're living in great luxury - a closet that's big enough to hold a wonderful antique dresser - I love the built-in jewelry/hanky drawers at the top, the curved and beveled mirror, and the Madeira (?) embroidery scarf. Then there's more storage cabinets, another mirror, electricity, room for a hamper, and clothes. What a closet!
When I visit I can just sleep in the closet. Toss a pillow in the corner and I'll be beyond happy.
I hope you post more photos.

Look good Chris. Where did you get the neat wire cubby for your plastic tubs?
Spurs on the bed. :O

Original Author10 years agoThanks Stringweaver.
LL The white dresser is really a vintage jelly cabinet. I cleaned the shelves inside but left the stains around where some jars set and over flowed or?? I have used this cabinet in so many places in the house. It is a home made piece found locally. The Hoosier was kind of stripped to the wood and I worked on it some more then decided it was one of those pieces that was meant to be painted. The wood is not pretty. So yes I painted it then I added mirror to the three top door centers and a little bit of checker board green and white glass around the edges. You know I can leave nothing alone.
Caroline I have a confession. The hanky drawers and mirror do not really belong to the dresser. I saw them at an antique shop and knew they would go perfectly with this dresser. The dresser is from 1868-78. It was the only years the acorn and oak leaves were used as drawer pulls. It even has a secret drawer on it. I did not discover until after I had owned the dresser for over 8 years. It really is a fun piece. The closet is nice. I always wanted a pretty closet. Not sure this is the final arrangement. I might switch it to go the other way. Will live with this for a bit and see how I feel about it.
MO Bound I think I bought the wire cubbies at walmart. I do not depend on the end things provided to hold them together. I used zip ties for extra holding power.
Shades_of_idaho
Original Author10 years agoForgot I bought the plastic dish pans for drawers from the dollar store and I used extra panels from the grids to make each cubby to hold two dish pans with panel between. I think I had two sets then part of a third from a yard sale.
plastic dish pans
I use some bins like that in a lower cab in my kitchen for 'drawers' to hold my plastic food containers. I do have to open the door on it, but then I just slide out the bin to find the size I need and lid. I have 2, 1 for larger sizes and 1 for the smaller containers.
Shades_of_idaho
Original Author10 years agoSteph I also use the plastic dish pans for drawers in the lower cabinets in the kitchen. For the same thing. My plastic food containers. Since I do not use those containers for left over food much now I might start using them to package my meat to freeze instead of baggies. Would take more freezer space but I think I have enough for that and reusable and would hold the juice well. Hummmm Good idea Steph.
Looking back at the photos. I REALLY need to paint the brackets behind the mirror in the closet. I have to have them to hold up the shelf above. They do look pretty ugly gray. Or maybe I can find my long mirror to cover them. But I like the look of this other mirror. It came from my old neighbor lived across the street. I bet it was one thing that belonged to his wife. The frame on the mirror is actually plastic ,was gold I painted white.
And I just had a thought. I have a small window with the divided pains that might fit that space. Will have to check it out. It needs glass and would make a great mirror. It is painted a funky green that I might leave that way and just seal it. I will have to drag it in to see if it fits. OH joy more fun.

"I might start using th em to package my meat to freeze instead of baggies"
I use some of my plastic containers to freeze things in - like soup, chili, spaghetti sauce. I use baggies for my meat patties and chicken strips. I have a 2nd ice bin and am going to use it to contain the meat patties/strips in baggies. right now it's gotten wild in my freezer and stuff is just stuffed in there wherever I could fit it. that's not good... actually, I'm getting low on stuff in the freezer and want to clean it out before I get more meat to freeze. I think 'containing' all of the bagged foods will help. I'm hoping to fit in one of those coated wire 'shelf' things to make another division in the freezer.
Shades_of_idaho
Original Author10 years agoSoundes good Steph. Got to thinking the plastci containers would not keep the air away from the meat so that is out. I do not do sauces of any kind any more for me. Why I have so many of the containers. OH well I might just use them in my mosaic space for glass bits.
The joke is on me and using the window as mirror in closet. The morning glory have grown around the dividers in the widow and it will have to stay put until we get a killing frost for the vines. Then I will cut them off the window frame. I had it tucked in along the front porch railing. I was able to measure it and it is the perfect size for the space. It will hide all that is on the wall I want hidden so I guess this IS the way the closet will be staying. I will find another place for the cute mirror.

Shades, I really love your new guest room. It's beautiful! I love purple so I may be biased. And I love old furniture too. You've done a great job setting it all up. What a large undertaking, including the painting.
Caroline, I like your jewelry cabinet too and I hope your great-niece loved it too.

Original Author10 years agoEvery Girl needs a chandelier in their closet. Hahahaha So I made one from an old light I took apart years ago. It is not the dream chandelier I had in mind. for now it will work. considering the cost to me was nothing other than some time to make modifications to make this work. I am pretty pleased with the out come. I would say my closet it complete. I might try to figure a way to hang a nice large crystal on the bottom center. I have one but I do not want to hit it while dressing in there.

Looks good, Shades! I would like something like that in my closet. I don't really use my closet, but when I did, I had put up one of those lights that run on battery. What a waste!!! It is so dim, it isn't even worth having! :( So now I just wait until it is light out to go in the closet. LOL
Shades_of_idaho
Original Author10 years agoThanks Murraysmom. I find myself going in the closet several times a day for dressing or putting laundry away or getting shoes or or or??? Gads why do I go into my closet so many times?? I think I might be a bit weird.
And another change to the bedroom. This antique crochet spread is huge. It was folded small and then a mouse ate through all the layers and ruined it. This was why it came to me. The guy that had it, his wife's mother made it and wife died, said I could have it and maybe salvage parts of it. Well I found some thread that I thought would be the right color. I was afraid to wash it before I did the repairs in fear it would make them worse. I spent hours, a whole winter, working on this project. It was a challenge. got it done finally washed it and the thread I used was not even close to what the original was. Soooooooo I hung onto it for years agonizing in rather to dye it or not. Well this morning I decided to go for it and of course in purple. Cause purple is so my color. Very happy with how it turned out and now I can use it instead of it sitting in a drawer and the repaired areas do not show.

I love the bedspread, and all your improvements.
Will the dye hold? How do you "dye" your projects? I may have to try something similar myself.
Wow!!! I love that!! What a great idea! It looks great and such a pretty color.
I got to thinking about the closet discussion and I realized that while I don't use my closet, I use my whole second bedroom as a closet!! LOL When I do laundry, I dump it on the bed in the second bedroom. Then it is easy to fold and while a normal person would then put it away, I just work off the piles for something to wear everyday! So I guess I really have a very large walk-in closet!! :o)
