Something I'm getting started on

Things have been really busy for me...4 kids in multiple scouting organizations, summer time, camps, getting ready for back to school, and more. But finally I'm getting some time to quilt.

My oldest DD is currently working on her Girl Scout Gold Award project (equivalent to a Boy Scout Eagle project) which is centered around her passion for birds of prey. She's already organized a rescue/rehab group to do a presentation at a GS summer camp, sharing their birds.

The 2nd part of her project is collecting supplies and then building a rehabilitation cage for a different rehab organization's 2 screech owls. This is underway now.

I had always planned to present her with a quilt when she finally finishes her project. So figured I better get started with that plan. I am not totally set on the overall layout yet, but have 6-7 paper pieced blocks to make with various birds of prey (various owls and eagles, an osprey if I can find one, and a hawk) which I envision around the outside edges of the quilt.

The eagle here is going to be the center medallion, if you will, and will be raw edged appliqued down during the quilting process. It's all fused together at this point, and I'll have to figure out how to keep it safe until it's needed.

Big project; unknown duration; immeasurable amount of hours still to go.

That is awesome for both you and your daughter. I was a GS through HS graduation, but didn't get the Gold Award, town I grew up in wasn't really behind the GS, like they were the BS. I admire your daughter for pursuing this and like the project she chose. The quilt you're making her is going to be breathtaking and cherished for a long time. Looking forward to seeing the completed quilt.

Sounds like a very cool quilt. My DD loves birds of prey, too. Now that she lives in CO, she loves going on organized bird walks. We did a lot of birding when I went to visit. I won't show DD the quilt though, she might want one, too.

Bev, so far it wasn't very difficult. And if I can get someone to quilt it for me, then I won't have to worry about all those edges myself. lol

Sounds like quite an ambitious quilt! I love that eagle block. It's so intricate and realistic. I'm sure your quilt will look great and your daughter will cherish it for a long time.

i like the video you linked too. He has a YouTube channel called Man Sewing and has some neat ideas. He has a wall quilt called cityscape that's really cool.
