Looking for an air conditioning system that will work for an old beach cottage.

What is the purpose of the mechanical unit in the bottom center of the bookshelf? Wondering if this some kind of Air Conditioning system? I'd like to replace the window units in our 1930's era beach cottage. There is no crawl space nor room for duct work. Have heard of other/newer ways to accomplish this, wondering if this may be for that purpose.

Hello and thank you for your question. The system in the picture is a Rannai Direct Vent Wall Furnace. It is a propane fired heating system that does work well ... when renovating old cottages. There unfortunately is no cooling component to the system. This project is in Maine and near the coast, so cooling was not a driver. That being said, we would recommend that you look into an air-to-air heat pump system. New advancements in technology have made these systems a good option recently and they can provide both heating and cooling from the same unit.
