The room is dark. The colors are dark. The art on the wall looks faded and there isn't enough art on the walls. The rug appears small. You could update the room by picking a lighter color for the walls, changing out the pillows and perhaps rotating a new rug into the space. I also think you need better art for the walls properly placed along with better lighting. I am not very good at arranging art on the walls, you might want the help of a professional to assist.

Your furniture arrangement is not cohesive and I think that's what's bothering you. I also agree the walls are too dark. You can get the same feeling with a lighter color on the walls. You don't have enough natural light in there from what I can see in the photos to have a color that dark on the walls. I would love to see a floorplan of thise space without furniture. It looks like you might have too much in there.

i maybe wrong but i think your couches should be back to back. you also need unifiers. everything is separate. rugs? pillows? I can not see the colors and patterns well enough. also more lamps would help.

As others have mentioned, the room is very dark. Your current window treatments with the cornices are quite dated, and don't really contribute much to the room.

I think that if you drew from the pillows and the white ceiling and changed out your window treatments for something lighter, there would be an immediate difference.

Something like a Belgian linen curtain in Oyster, with two-pinch or three-pinch pleats would have an immediate impact in bringing the room together.

Order some free fabric swatches to see how they look in the space!

I was also thinking back to back couches.

I see Victorian/traditional influences, and some of your pieces are lovely. I agree if you change the walls, the window treatments and add a rug you'll tie the room together. You can have drama on the wall color, just not something quite so dark.

I love the over mantel mirror, but why isn't it over the fireplace? The other thing, you might want to put a very pale blue tint in the ceiling paint to help brighten the room. You have some very nice features in the room, like book cases. One thing that may help with lighting is to get LED strips and put them in those bookcases to bring more light in. If you love the wall color contemplate getting some overhead LED pot lights to wash your walls with color and to brighten up the corners. You do not want overhead lights anywhere that someone will be sitting because downright over people makes them look really old and garish. I also agree that the drapery material is dragging the room down. Try removing them but leaving (you can leave the rods up.). If privacy is an issue, you might want to look at plantation shutters for the lower half. Post some more pictures, including room dimensions and we will try to help. Remember, you don't have to take all the advice, but it's a great forum to get IDEAS!!!

I love the idea that most of you mentioned about having the couches back to back! I want to do that very much except I'm having some trouble with putting that together. Let me show the pics

It seems that in order for each of the couches to be squared in front of their respective fireplace/TV, they are not exactly back to back.

Also, I am considering taking the chair away from the wall with the square art. I agree, I need different/better artwork. I don't even know where to start with that without spending a fortune. Any ideas. This is the pic of the wall I'm talking about.

I would start with the red, perhaps going with a neutral from the fabric in the chairs.

Also try the sofa on the other side by the fireplace with the chairs in the traffic pattern coming in.

yes, you might wish to get some of those sliders to make this easier! it does not look like you have 2 fireplaces, just one and then a very large console for your tv? can you not move that?

I would say maybe the 3-seater needs to face the FP and the smaller sofa the TV. See if that allows you to center them better. Another option to consider would be to place the TV where you have the art and chair, since they may be eliminated. This might solve glare issues on the TV from the windows too. Use the smaller sofa with its back to the island/bar if there is room. If that is too crowded, think about two chairs and no small sofa. You just have to keep pushing and shoving 'til it works right.
