Just install larger windows if you can, but check that you can solve the problem from inside the room. The only way to add a balcony is to support it from below and the balcony will make the room below dark.

I figured we'd have to have support posts and the room below already is fairly dark - smallish windows and the shrubs there. Pretty much the whole house is dark and our last house had a ton of natural light - which I'm really missing.

@nnigrt - what is the size of your balcony?

it's 8 feet deep.... must be about 14' long....not sure on that part. the supports are 6' from the house with 2' of deck beyond that. hmmm it runs the length of the bedroom so must be more like 18' sorry.

we have 2 large chairs with ottomans on it, and you can still move around.

we considered 2 sets of sliders but 1. they were expensive cuz had to be hurricane proof 2. the heat really bakes on that side of the house and 3. i like room left for art on the wall. : )

We currently only have those 3 Windows on that side (with plantation shutters - came with the house) and one small window on the side wall - but that one I'm considering removing because it's off to one side and pretty much forces you to put the bed odd centered and that bugs me. So, that's why we are trying to figure out how to let more light in (especially if we remove the small window), improve the otherwise pretty boring room, and possibly make the back of the house look nicer. :). Hubby isn't sure we'd use the balcony and perhaps we should just put in larger Windows on that back wall. I'm undecided at this point. Balconies can be so nice if done right! :)

we are empty nesters, this is our vacation home. so the two of us sit there every weekend morning in the summer as it is always too damp to sit by the pool before 11 or so. if we still had kids at home they would have been there bugging us... best of luck with your plans.
