i dislike paper in stair halls, its expensive for one thing, and all of those pattern repeats marching up the stair wall.

i put up a chair rail in my front hall and put paper below, paint above. with a light color paint and your paper brightening the bottom of the walls you might be satisfied for much less money.

i cant find a photo... but you can imagine this with paper just below the rail, and a really light paint above.

Just be sure you know where you want it to start and end -- for example, if you just do the one long wall, that might be ok, or also adding the wall under the stairs. I wouldn't want to expand into going up the stairway to the next floor...

But honestly, if what you need is more light, you might look into adding an extra fixture or two, either overhead or as wall sconces.
