Brandywine cracking, catfacing, zippering -- some ad hoc observations

My wife grows an heirloom brandywine of unknown provenance. We have made some ad hoc observations with regard to cracking, catfacing, zippering. She is growing in raised beds and the fruit that forms below soil level on the overhanging vines show noticeably fewer deformities than the fruit that forms above soil level on the upright vines.
