Cat facing is usually due to cold weather and it happens mostly with the early setting in the season. It usually stops as the weather gets warmer.

Ac with cracking : Big tomatoes such as cat faced ones, as the fruit crows in size you will see some cracks at the stem end. These cracks usually heal and seal.

Another kind of cracking is after the fruit ripens. To prevent this you can pick them once they show some color and let them ripen inside.

So, you're saying that the fruit which hangs low in the pathways outside the raised bed boxes form better than those which are 'higher' up, not necessarily on the vine, but in actual measured height from the base of the soil? Interesting. Of course the results have to be repeated to be of any more value than simple coincidental observation, but the makers of that hanging bag thing would be happy to hear about it lol.

I think this is probably explained by the fact that the fruit on "overhanging" vines are later fruit, which have set in warmer weather, form when plant roots are larger, more robust, and more capable of dealing with fluctuations in conditions, and also tend to be smaller fruit on average. WRT to cracking in particular, we'd also have to look at weather conditions during the fruit's later development. I suspect we'd find that earlier fruit was maturing during the hottest part of the summer, for example, while later fruit have less extreme conditions as they approach maturity. We'd also have to look at rain patterns. Perhaps vine length is a factor as well. I suppose it's possible that, the longer the vine, the less pressure on fruit as fluids circulate in the plant?

We have had 3-4 weeks threatening frost. Half hour of 31 ℉ - amateur and official measurements - just before sunrise. The brandywine vines trained up the chain-link fence and most exposed have suddenly developed more blossoms than any time so far this year.
