I don't think your cabinets are bad. Painting them would be a ton of work because those factory finished cabinets need to be primed very well before painting. I would hire someone to spray them and then you are in the 2K range. DIY would be a nightmare to do those.

I like that blue paint above, I also think changing out your flooring to a travertine tile to tie in the backsplash would do wonders. A smooth travertine as opposed to a chipped edge finish. maybe 18X18.

yes, the blue paint (or any other paint!) would 'refresh' the space as would some new hardware. And those 12" square tiles you have really date the space. go larger w/the natural stone and also benefit from less grout lines.

Painting the grout lines to make them disappear can help update the floor.

You have a few sections of cabinets - how many is it 3? I'm wondering if island could change color, or even another?

But the ones that are most open to living area, I'd keep your "furniture stain."
