Absolutely possible. Cost really depends on a lot of factors. But it will be well worth not having a traffic pattern in the middle of your kitchen. Smart choice.

Thanks everybody. I appreciate the comments. GN- I am a little hesitant to go with your design since it removes the dining space. We would like to have a sitdown table. My wife really wants to "move" the door so I will try to layout a couple options. I am having a little trouble fitting all the appliances in the U-shape.

In my area (northeast), patio door = $1500 to $2000, probably $1500 to install, $500 to $1000 to remove the old door, and probably $3000 to extend the deck. Total cost probably $6000 to $8000. Ask your gas company about putting anything over the gas meter - some have clearance requirements. To make the U shaped kitchen work, swap the range and the refrigerator, and leave the living room wall in place to back up the refrig. Delete the peninsula that looks good but no one likes to use for actual seating. Use a real table in the dining area instead.
