Dry shade shrub recommendation, please!

Maryland, zone 7.
I'm looking for something to plant in dry shade, at the top of a slope that turns to full sun at the bottom.
I'm looking for something to put under a neighborhood sign that sits at the top of the slope. The sign is 7' long, and sits between 27-32" off the ground (depending on how far down the slope I plant).
I'm in love with pee wee oakleaf, but not sure if it will handle the dry, sandy soil. I could drag the hose across the street if I have to.
Any other suggestions? I'd like it to max out at 3'. The area has a woodsy feel. I'll fill in areas with ferns and Solomon's seal.
Many thanks!
