For custom effects it's better to apply one color over another to get more depth and shading. Maybe you want the wood tone stain in the wood and the white on top as a wash. Make sample boards.

The wood and the top coat will both add/affect the final color. If you apply the same stain color to say, red oak vs. hard maple, or use an oil-based top coat vs. an acrylic, you will have different results. The only way to predict (without much experience) is to run sample boards.

What brand of stain?

TEST your mixes on sample boards. There's a definite limit to how many times you can sand a floor.

And remember that the wood species is a major part of the mix. With the strong reddish tones of oak, you'll have to neutralize it to get a "greige" (which isn't really a color, it's a decorator's term for all shades of brownish=grey with any sort of undertone).

Before applying stain and finish to the entire floor, experiment with a scrap piece of flooring. Do a sample finish on this piece. Also, the expanse of an entire finished floor will seem to be a couple of shades darker than a small piece in hand. Its an optical impression trick that your senses play on you.
