I don't think it's a good idea to prune that tree. Still too young, and the geometry of those branches does not really favor pruning right now.

You could prune those two on the sides if you really wanted a bushy shape. I don't think you want it bushy in the middle of the canopy though, it will become too overcrowded later.

Hey there I think you should watch the fairchild video on tipping small mango trees. Very infor m at I've and I learned a lot! I think I recall the video saying to tip it every so many inches. Here's a photo of my coconut cream mango. I've only tipped her once and has since put out a lot of new branches average 3 put scaffold branch

Very nice looking mango tree...where you posted the sections you want to prune should be just fine IMHO...don't wait much longer to do it. Next month is Oct and you want the new growths to harden off and rest so it will bloom this winter ( assuming you are going to let it fruit for next summer?)

I have "pugged" all of my mango trees and they do well...prefably you don't want to trim after mid sept. to let the new growths harden for flowers in winter...they need a few months of rest...

I wish I could answer your question about the single hole, but I'm still very much a newbie. My in-ground tree in this thread is my first, so I'm learning as I go. I "tipped" my tree today according to the advice in the video you recommended. I love how we can all learn from each other : )

Figs,what variety is it? Seed grown?

I don't think it would hurt to cut the tree,but I don't see the reason to rush to do it. You have an all year growing season,maybe let it get taller to see how its shaping up.

Thank you figs, I'm a newbie too. I just have an extreme addiction to collecting fruit trees. I'm running out of space so I've heard you could put two trees in one hole but I'd like to hear it from someone that has some experience and if it worked. I bought a pickering to plant in the front. But then I was at a big block store and couldn't pass up a deal on a cogshall 3 gallon for 15 since the container had a Crack hehe!!

it is a grafted Rapoza mango. It is a Univ of Hawaii cultivar. It consistently places really well on taste tests, beating popular varieties like Edwards, Gouveia, Pirie, Haden, etc. Two years ago, it placed 2nd of 24 varieties that entered for judging at the annual mango festival in Hawaii. I was honored to have been selected as a judge for this event, and it was my personal favorite. Here are two pics: the first is of the table that was judged and the second pic is one of the Rapozas I picked up at a local farmers market.

Daniel, we're two peas in a pod. I'm a newbie gardener who is acquiring more trees than I have space (and knowledge) for! I have:

- 3 mangos (1 in the ground)

- 3 avocados (1 is about to be in the ground soon!)

- 2 lemons (1 in the ground)

What type of avocado do you have? What about your papayas? I've always wanted a sweet yellow peach of some sort, but they won't grow my climate... funny how that works.

The avocado I have is a winter mexican avocado. They are a delicious variety and they are good for making some guacamole! The papayas to tell you the truth I have no clue hehe. I got some seedling from my father's trees and they're super sweet and large. Have you ever looked into low chill peaches? I have a white fleshed tropic snow peach 100-150 chill hours (45° or less) and they taste like candy! If you like yellow peaches I bet florida prince or tropic beauty would be a good choice.

Guys, after the new pugging, or "tipping" on Sep 20, there are new tiny signs of growth on a few parts of the tree. Yay! I'll post another pic in about a month or so.
