Hydrangea help

Hey guys. I bought two hydrangea at Walmart in may. I live in an apartment on 3rd floor in Savannah ga. I planted the hydrangea in pots that were 2-3x the size of the pot they came in. They didn't bloom again and parts of the plant started to die. I do see some new growth on the bottom. What should I do to optimize growth since they are in pots? I know they're not really meant to be in pots.

You can grow them in pots but they prefer being outside (afternoon shade; not in windy locations) when the temps are warm. Questions?

The leaves look like they are suffering from powdery mildew. Is that what the gray-ish/white-ish stuff is? Are you watering the leaves instead of watering the soil?

When you say that parts of the plant begin to die, what parts are beginning to die? How? What are you noticing?

What potting mix are you using?
