Oops, hit post too soon. If the tv will fit, remove the shelves in the bookcase and put the tv on the cabinet.

If you don't want to remove those bookshelves, you could consider one of those tv hanging contraptions that pull out, swivel, etc.; with the thought that you could face it downward for serious watching. You could keep it upright and flush in when working in your kitchen or going about your day. The bookshelves add much to the room architecturally, and I'd try this idea first and live with it awhile. Good luck!

Or just use a smaller flatscreen and set it on bottom shelf/ledge of built in. It will block a small amount of shelve but look nice

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Couple of things I probably should have mentioned.. before we relocated (unexpected job move) we just bought a $3000 65in curved tv... not sure the moving contraption will work and it's too big for the shelves...

Maybe you can make family room in other room?

When you say it's too big for the shelves, do you mean it won't fit width wise even if the shelves are removed? Because if that is the case, it won't fit over the fireplace either, since the fireplace appears to be narrower than the shelves. If that is the case, it is just too big for the room period, no matter where you put it. I looked it up and a 65 inch TV is about 58 inches wide, have you really measured the spaces? I suggest you make a cardboard template of the TV and place it in different areas to see if it will really fit anywhere, and to get a sense of how it will look in the room.

If it is truly too big to fit where the shelving is, it will completely overwhelm the room. Put it elsewhere in the house, or cut your losses and sell it and buy an appropriately sized TV.

make the template as suggested above. And research the pull down mounting brackets, there is probably one for a 65 in tv. The issue with the bracket, is you're always moving it up and down, or end up leaving it in the down position, which obscures the fireplace. If this is a new build home, maybe the builder would be willing to take out the whole builtin cabinet and shelves, and take out the surrounding molding, which will give you a little more space. Do you have a formal living room or other formal space that you wouldn't normally use? Turn that into a media room (with the ginormous tv) and get a smaller one for the family room, for daytime viewing.

In a newly built house, I had the same issue (where to put the TV?) and finally decided to have the TV live elsewhere. Now the living room is for guests, the fireplace and more moments between people rather than have people de-focus into movies and television. It also presented far more design options for decorating rather than having to work around a giant black screen. We're already so inundated with media, there needs to be a room where it's about live humans rather than having everyone zone out on a TV.

These are the 2 other rooms downstairs.. we love all the windows and open plan but it sure does make it hard to place a tv...

You seem to have two dining rooms. I'd make one of them (your last photo, with drum chandelier) into the TV room, with a couple of fine walls for TV hanging, and some cozy seating, and then you can decorate your living room around the fireplace and the views, for grown-up living. :)

Back to add: if being able to see a TV in the kitchen is a determining issue, you can get very small sets for in there that hang under a cabinet or sit at the end of your beverage center.

I have the type of TV in my kitchen that acm shows, that folds up under counter. Small but perfect for me to watch while working in kitchen, and swivels to be seen from dinette area too if wanted. Not open concept kitchen, though.

We had the TV in front of the windows in our family room. I liked it. With drapes on the window, I think you could do that also...keep drapes closed behind TV...open on each side. On the shelves is your best bet but if too big, the only place is in front of the windows.

(Not a criticism, just an anecdote - when we purchased our first house, the first question by my husband for every house we looked at was, 'where do I put the TV?' If there was no place for a large TV with the sofa right across from it, we went to the next house. It was his one request and he got it.)
