Absolute CRAY CRAY Tide liquid dosing recommendations!!

I was chatting with (Laundry) Mitch this morning, and he asked me if I have ever smelled Tide Mountain Spring liquid detergent. Of course I have :) It is one of my favourite scents, and smells like old fashioned Tide liquid!! NOT sweet, and it is clean and fresh. It does not come in "he". I saw a small bottle today at Ralph's (Kroeger) on sale, and figured what the heck! Like Mitch and I agreed on....it can always be used for hand/sink washing!

The bottle has absolute CRAZY dosing recommendations. It has Medium Loads, Large Loads AND (are you sitting down?)...."he" Full Loads!!! "he" Full Load dosing recommendations on a NON-he liquid detergent!!! But wait, there is MORE!!! "he" dosing says to use a FULL CAP. What? Why? Omg! Is P&G crazy?!

Anyway, I used 1oz (just shy on line 1 on the cap) for a full load of white hand towels. 150F, Kitchen Linen cycle. NOT too sudsy at all!! Smell is heavenly!!

Video of Tide Mountain Spring Liquid in a front loader. Even with a high temp of 150F (this video was in the middle of the wash, and you could feel the heat thru the glass)....good/ideal sudsing!

Amazing. Costco's liquid detergent dosing, on a bottle I bought a few years ago, said to use twice the amount for a "he" load over a traditional washer load. I couldn't see the sense in that and gave it away.

Well shoot my toe off...Larsi my dear chick...I didn't know you liked the scent of this stuff..yes it is yum-yum. Cleans very well BUT never listen to P&G's dosing recommendations...they are nuts.

MamaP....Mountain Spring liquid & powder, always one of my Favs...back in the day, and even the current offerings are excellent. I do think the liquid smells better than the powder. Current Tide powders, he or not are just too sudsy!

P&G dosing is certifiably insane. I used about 1 ounce (30ml).

I am very, very happy that I can use Mountain Spring Liquid. You should try it Mama. It cleaned very well too. Rinse 1 was sudsy, Rinse 2 was great!!! All stains removed, and the scent was amazing!!

I started using Tide again just recently, and of course wondered about the "HE full load" recommendation. My take is that it means an American-sized HE washer full of clothes. A lot of clothes fit into a 4.5 or 5.0 cu ft washer, and you need a lot of detergent to wash them, right? This makes perfect sense to me.

I have quite the opposite experience with the Tide Turbo HE powders and liquids. I literally have almost no suds in both my top loaders and my compact front loaders. The list of detergents I cannot use is longer than my arm though. I never follow the manufacturers instruction but dose according to weight or volume depending on whether it is powder or liquid. No matter how little I use I cannot use any variant of Gain, no Tide Simply, no Persil Pro Clean, no All liquid, and Tide Pur Clean is iffy. I was pleasantly surprised after HE Turbo launched and it didn't kick my machines into an endless suds cycle using the sanitize cycle. LOL!

Suburbanmd is probably correct in that. I would assume a compact Euro machine not holding the amount of laundry that a much bigger US machine does would use less detergent. My Duet is 4.5 most of the time I use much more detergent than the 2T.

At first I was using 2T, but my clothes did not appear as clean as I felt they should..but I was nervous about suds and wanted to do what was supposed to be the right thing, a shot glass of detergent, and aim for no suds. I soon realized I needed more detergent and I needed to see some suds. IMO the only way not to see suds or just a couple is to underdose the detergent in which case ya no suds but also no clean clothes and no clean machine, because fact is HE detergent does not mean suds free. Anyway a bigger washer holding a larger load will require more detergent. And a US detergents dosing instructions would be for US washers.

I haven't used the dosage measuring cap/cup provided by detergent manufactures since I got my front loader.

I use the cup supplied in the detergent drawer for liquids and a separate Table Spoon measuring spoon for powders.

They (manufactures) recommend way too much.

@ Andrew Criswell.....I did say the P&G POWDERS are too sudsy, not the liquids.

I have posted several times, including images about how low sudsing P&G he turbo liquid Tide is. He turbo Tide liquid is a top performer in my front loader....so few bubbles, clean laundry and clear rinses!!

But P&G Cheer liquid and especially powder.....OMG :-O Suds, suds, suds....and just will not rinse!! Like Persil (USA) powder pearls, ick!!!

"Or... is it a struggling company, eager to sell more detergent and boost profits for their shareholders?"

I suspect this is probably the case. Only the hardest of waters might need those bigger doses.

I typically dose detergents so that I have a tiny "happy trail" on my Duet's window. For normal full loads I use line 1 with no issues. However, with a full load of bed sheets( 1full and 2 queens) this happy trail doesn't occur unless I use line 5. That includes the Hot water, although our water is moderately hard. Of course I use an extra rinse.

Dorey, I have to use 50-100% more detergent that some say they use on the forum. My water is moderately hard at 6-7 grains/gal water. I like to see a few bubbles too.

    I love powdered Persil Larsi!!!

I tend to follow the recommendations on detergent labels, and err on the generous side when they're vague (which they usually are). My water is also moderately hard. Some suds in the final rinse doesn't bother me much. And like I said in another thread, the drain water in my laundry sink is sudsier than what I see in the drum. No one answered when I asked whether they saw the same.

Wow if I had suds in the final rinse I would re-rinse. For me that is a recipe for a bad rash. I guess we are all so different in how are skin reacts to detergents.

Actually, my water is more around 8-9 grains per gallon. I can't stand suds in the final rinse. My washer drains down a standpipe so I can't see what it looks like. Bummer. My aunt who has a home water softener would use a full cap of Tide and Downy. What a waste.

Suburbanmd, my washer doesn't drain into a sink nor do I have a laundry room sink to test this, however I once did have a washer draining into a sink and I have a feeling that those of us with crystal clear rinses may be surprised to see what drains out of a final rinse.

@Suburban do you know how many gallons water your little giant holds in the final rinse? I know it would be more then my w1918. Would it be less than 5 gallons? As in a 5 gal bucket; I might drain the into a bucket and see what I get.

enduring, have a second bucket ready just in case.

I have an issue with suds coming out of my standpipe using tide powder f and g. I use less than the recommended amount but it doesnt help. Can anyone recommend a powder which is very low sudsing? Thanks!

    Cheer.

Thanks dadoes. Unfortunately they dont currently make a scent free powder. Are you familiar with All powdered detergent? They make a free and clear.

I never use liquid. I would rather not spend money for water that can get right out of my tap. I’ll buy Tide free & clear powder as long as I can still find it. Regardless, I never follow recommended amounts, as they are always far too much. I always use much less. Residue is terrible for textiles and skin. I also don’t understand these pods - many of my loads are less than full, and I prefer to adjust my detergent based on load size.

As an aside, I also don’t understand fragrances. Your shampoo and soaps are scented, then your deodorant and hair products. Now you put on scented clothing and top it off with cologne, then live with scented candles, air fresheners, etc. Yikes. Too much. Just an observation.

Emma, I am not familiar with any free-and-clear or unscented laundry products. I've never had a concern about scent or a need for unscented products. I don't buy the the products I use for the scent (except Snuggle Exhilarations Lavendar & Vanilla Orchid softener for bedding) ... the scents just are as they are.

Thanks theresen. May i ask how much Tide free powder you use and if you have a top or front loader, hard or soft water?

Thanks Dadoes. Are you by any chance familiar with any of the All powders?

    @emma darling

There are some industrial low suds detergents in buckets online. All detergent is not going to help your suds problem with drain pipe. I am not sure any detergent will. You have an issue unrelated to a detergent issue. I feel your pain, I hope you get it corrected.

If only everyone believed this FACT. I switched from Persil to Miele powders when I got my W1. I got the dosages down packed for my different type wash loads already. Miele powders are low suds, but attention still must be made for towels and denims. 1/4 line in Miele scoop for towels and denims. I use 3/4 line for whites and cotton shirts etc.

Emma, I have a Maytag front loader and for most full loads I probably use about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons. We have really hard city water here, but we keep it softened.

I have not used any All products since the late 1960s / early 1970s when All powder was touted as concentrated low-sudsing like Dash powder.

emma darling - Suds-a-palooza queen here (raises hand). LOL Our FL uses so little water that correct dosing is essential.

I've been using the All F&C powder for at least over a year with good results. I have to be careful with dosing, as I do with all laundry detergents. I recently tried some Tide F&C/Gentle powder and had similar good results.

The Tide F&C/Gentle liquid works well, too. I use that on my dark clothing because it has no optical brighteners.

Cheer powder works just as well and the scent is fairly light if it is dosed properly. No optical brighteners in that, either.

No over-sudsing on any of the above products as long as I do not overdose. It is often so hard to believe that one Tablespoon of detergent is all I need. The mental calculation of laundry load size and amount of soil on the garments can not be put down on paper. Gah.

Thanks so much Cavimum. Since you dont find that All is less sudsy than Tide (which is what I am using) I guess I will stick with the Tide for now (I have 2 nearly full boxes) and try to figure out a way to deal with my standpipe issue. Im curious if you use 1 tbsp for both powder and liquid since "charts" usually list a larger amount for powdered. Also, do you have hard or soft water? Thx!

Often dosing is the same for both powder and liquid. Once I get dosing figured out for various types of laundry, I make a post-it-note cheat sheet and tape it to the box or bottle. The dosing changes (that mental calculation) if a load is larger, smaller, more, or less dirty and the second rinse is checked for over sudsing.

Our water is in the "moderately hard" range.
