Painting will be much easier if you are thinking about doing this job yourself. To refinish the wood, I would highly recommend going with a professional especially with since your wood is maple. Maple wood often will need to have a conditioner applied to the wood, to prevent the medium to darker stains from becoming blotchy. This is not an easy thing to do.

If you decide to paint them yourself, you will need to wipe the cabinets down, removing all dirt, grease and grime. Then lightly sand them with fine grit sandpaper. Next you will need to purchase a GOOD QUALITY oil base primer, which will be the first coat. After the primer dries you can start the first coat of paint. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's directions and take note of drying time before applying the coat of paint and between coats!

The best advice I can give is to make sure to use a GOOD QUALITY oil base paint (otherwise….you will get what you pay for), not a water base paint. The oil base paint will be a more durable and almost
indestructible finish once it is cured. The paint I recommend using is the Sherwin Williams Paints ProClassics Alkyd Interior Enamel, which goes in wide variety of their colors. Note: Two coats of paint is plenty when using the ProClassic. It is also important to make sure you purchase a good paint brush!
