carsick dog

carsick puppy. She is now almost 6 months old. I have always made it a short trip. A block up to less than a mile. She is loose in a car. Had food many hours before. Any ideas???

    Try just getting in car, and turning it on, while you give pup a treat, and then get out and take puppy for a walk. Then drive to end of short street, and go for walk, get in and go home.

    You have to not let puppy get to the point where they start drooling, because then they feel sick to their stomach, and will associate the car with feeling sick. You'll reinforce the idea that being in a car is bad.


    So just do very short things, and end it with something really fun, so dig associates the car with "fun". If puppy throws up normally before you even get down the street, then start with getting in car, turn on, treat, get out and walk. If puppy is ok for an 8 min ride before they start drooling, stop driving after 4 or 5 min, and go for walk. Gradually lengthen time.

    Ginger snaps can settle the stomach. Or you can give a little Dramamine about 15 min before getting in a car.

      One of our dogs didn't handle car rides very well and it took well over a year for her to get better.

      She seems to do best in a wire crate with a small fan blowing on her. Before I got the fan, I made sure the a/c vents were directed on her, so that she had plenty of air.

      I read something about giving the dog a ginger snap before going for a ride to settle the tummy.

      A booster seat with belted harness. If puppy can see out the windows, it might help the nausea.

      Also, lots of times, they grow out of it.

      Whatever you do, secure your dog in the car ;-)

      I agree. If the puppy is in a seat, facing forward and can see out, it will probably do better. Plus you could crack the window a bit. Fresh air helps too.

      Securing your dog may resolve the problem without further intervention.

      It is usually advised not to feed a dog 6-8 hours before a car ride (water is okay) however some dogs do better with food in their stomach.

      Talk to your vet about prescribing Dramamine, which is also used by people for motion sickness. A holistic preventive method is spraying peppermint, ginger or chamomile scents in the car. A thunder shirt, used to quell anxiety, may also work.

      Update and many thanks to all, great suggestions. I should be clearer, sorry. We drive 1/8 mile to park, get out and play. Max trip is one mile but she is already drooling! Won't be taking her on our vacation.

      I would be so bummed if we couldn't travel with our dogs. Keep working on it and with your vet. I'm betting things will improve.

      I agree and good suggestions!! Max is really adorable!! I hope you can find a solution too because you still need to take her to the vet and even to the boarding kennel if she isn't going on vacation with you. Good luck!

      Many years ago I had one dog that always threw up in the car, but you never knew when it would happen, could be 20 miles into the trip or 50.

      Current dog (a rescue that is prefect in every way!) doesn't throw up, heck doesn't even drool. Sits in the back seat between the kids and sleeps.
