Need advice on a range hood

Was looking at this hood:

To go over a 36" cooktop so that it can fit inside a straight line of cabinets and be mostly hidden.
Was a little bit worried about having a 30"x12" deep vent above a 36"x24" deep cooktop.
We could go with a deeper vent (18") but then we need 18" deep cabinets on the wall, which are more expensive, and could limit the usable countertop space.

Hello Mark ,

Minimum size built in the model you should be purchasing, is 36``. If you purchase a smaller range hood than your stove, you will not be covering the entire cooking surface, which is not a good idea. What about the depth? Can I get a 36" wide hood that's only 12" deep?

The width concern is about setting fire to your cabinets. There's no similar problem with depth, but I'm not sure that something that narrow can really adequately ventilate the whole cooking surface. If the specs say it can do the job, then party on!

Actually, you want 6" wider and deeper because Heat, Odors, Grease, Steam, and Smoke, all move outwards as they rise. You need a larger capture zone than a cooking zone. For a 36" cooking zone, you need a 42"W x 27" D hood. CFM is dependent on the cooker below. A Pro style range needs a Pro style vent. With Make Up Air provided so it doesn't backdraft any other combustion appliances like your water heater.

Seems like overkill. Some people have down draft which cannot possible perform as well as an undersized hood, can it?

No, it's not overkill for someone who regularly cooks. If you don't cook, then you only need to keep wood more than 30" from the cooking surface and do whatever minimal thing that floats your boat. The next buyer of the house will deduct majorly though, as indoor air quality is becoming more of an issue with the tight homes that are being produced. Cooking effluents are a major contributor to poor indoor air quality.

So then downdraft would also be a no go, right? And recirculating a no go?

Also the 6" overhang rule is only for island installations right?

No, the 6" rule is for all hood installations. Downdrafts are a bad joke. Recirculation is worse. In a renovation, you have to deal with many more architectural constraints, and do the best you can with the tradeoffs.. In new construction, designing something stupid into the home when you have the chance to get it right is criminal.

The hood in our current home is roughly 36"x24" and covers the stove top area, but the filters literally only cover a space of about 30"x12". Are you saying the opening in the hood must be that big or which size opening must you have?

The capture area should be 42"W x 27" D.

we have a very similar vent hood. i am worried about height we are instilling our vent hood. what is standard height for vent hood? 30" from top of counter? my husband is really tall and we are worried about him bumping his head. we are getting custom cabinets so we can move higher if needed. thoughts??
