Painting the walls cream (similar to the counter color) will really brighten the space. I would avoid painting the cabinets at least until you're in the house longer. I would also replace the window treatment with a simple shade.

I would leave the cabinets as is and add a multi-color backsplash with browns and grays. I would also do a plain and simple window treatment. I would paint the walls a revere pewter type color to tie all the colors together.

I just want to add my voice to the "wait it out a bit" crowd. A month is not that long, and you'll be glad to spend time just being in your home. The kitchen looks clean and relatively attractive, functional...there's no rush.

Spend some time on Houzz investigating kitchens and saving the ones you like to an ideabook, use other sites too. Get a feel for the themes that are emerging in the pictures you are drawn to, them make your plan when you have a vision.

There is a lot of amazing advise available here, but no one can tell you what you should love or aspire to.

Definitely paint them. Fill those hardware holes and get new hardware. The placement it wrong. How about a navy base cabinet with a light gray upper cabinet? Then get a very light countertop that isn't overly busy. Then for a contemporary look, do glass backsplash in white.

No matter what you do to the kitchen it will always benefit from better lighting. I would want to change a lot of things in this kitchen. Certainly live with it for a while rather than doing too many little projects when you may want to save for a more comprehensive solution.
