Has anyone seen IKEA's new "concrete effect" countertop?

Hi all,

I'm choosing materials or a kitchen from a distance. There are IKEA stores near the apartment being renovated but none where I am now.

Since my last trip to IKEA they added a new countertop, the EKBACKEN Concrete Effect. This is a laminate top with some kind of fake concrete finish. I've seen their other laminate tops before and did not love them but I'm hoping that fake concrete looks better than fake stone.

Has anyone seen this in person? If so, how does it look? Would a person who likes concrete be likely to like it?

Thank you!

I saw it today. I haven't seen concrete counters in a while, but I have to say that I really, really liked that counter. It has a mottled color and is not smooth, so has some slight texture. Reminded me of leathered granite surface.

Thank you so much. I am going to go ahead and order it without being able to see it.

They have great customer service, see if they can send you a sample.

Actually, I saw the counters in Europe, so last time I was at my local IKEA here in the US, I asked why they didn't have the counters on display.

They did, however, have them in the warehouse. I was told that they usually have everything on display and to come back "in two days". They were going to get a counter and cut a display piece.

If you can wait, I can see whether the US counters are the same as the European counters. I'd hate to be responsible for your ordering something that you may not like in the end.

Or even better, ask for a sample or go to the trouble and
visit a local IKEA after making sure they have it either in the
    warehouse or on display.

Thanks for offering to double check nosoccermom. That's very nice of you to check for me. I just went ahead with it.

My contractor picked them up and says it looks "beautiful". He took a photo of the finish (below). It's a closer up image than what's shown on the IKEA website.

I think I'm going to like it. I will post again when I have a photo of it installed.

We were considering quartz but we need to dial back on budget after some some very nice appliance purchases.

I saw it when we were at Ikea a few weeks ago. Love it! Would have strongly considered it had it been available when we were changing countertops. Lovely matte finish. I think you'll be pleased!

I kept on going over the counters with my hands because I couldn't believe it was laminate.

The ones I saw were darker than the pic your contractor too, though.

    Looking forward to your pics!

My contractor takes terrible photos but here's the latest I got from him. I like the amount of shine but really can't tell much until I get there. Note that he hasn't cut the hole for the sink yet.

While I'm sharing this photo, what do you all think about the horizontal strip between the cabinets and the counter? The idea was to raise the counter to be perfectly flush with the sink but I'm not loving it. It might be too late to remove but I'm thinking of asking.

did you have the ikea concrete installed? Id love to see some photos please. Thank YOU!

    Yes, photos please!

Does anyone know who makes the concrete effect laminate for IKEA? Only two 25.5" edge strips come with a countertop. For a bar application I need additional pieces of edge strip for the perimeter. IKEA doesn't offer it as a separate product. Thanks for any ideas you have!

I saw this article JUST before I went to Ikea, with the intent of buying a black countertop (which I hated when I saw it, white speckles, ugh) Saw the concrete counter with the white, square porcelain sink I was interested in. Immediately bought both along with a faucet and a thick black shelf. This will go on ugly Home Depot brown cabinets repainted black, with new cup handles, against a white painted brick wall. Cannot wait to see it all pulled together.

    Would love some pics.

I would also like to know who makes the concrete effect laminate for IKEA? Need extra pieces as well!

@Hillside House: Love how the install looks in your basement wet bar. May I ask where you found the backsplash white/black tiles? Thanks

It's just a standard 3x6 Daltile subway, from Home Depot.

I've got this worktop (concrete effect) and it looks really good. We have the same for splash back also. Really pleased. However, I've not yet found the correct colour sealant. Can anyone help?

Nic, I am pleased that you are happy with the worktop colour. I am thinking of ordering it as well for when we have our kitchen renovated.
