So you get big pieces of poster board and small cans of the paint paint the boards with 2 coats and stand them in the room you want to paint see how you like the color in all times of the day

I painted my living room BM Simply White. I thought I couldn't go wrong with the slight yellow tint, but in my room it got S blue tint that you can see in the one photo ( the other photo is the before picture of the room painted yellow). I'm looking for a white that will be soothing, warm and not read gray or blue. My wall is filled with paint chips and I'm floundering! I currently have the following MB color chips on my wall: linen white, timid white, Acadia white, marble white, feather down, rial silk, mayonnaise, seashell, and maybe a million others that I can't remember. Does anyone know the BM equivalent to SW Shoji white? I know they can match, but my BM store does color matching by hand and they don't do it well :/

Why is white so difficult and so pretty?

Patricia Colwell Consulting, does the wall texture change the color at all (will it look different on the board than it will on the wall)? The Simply White looked so much lighter on my wall than the large paint sheet.

Can you center the rug with the sofa, chairs and window instead of off to the side?

You will get a truer idea of what the paint looks like on your walls if you actually paint a test patch on the wall. A small piece of paper stuck to the wall isn't going to be that accurate. Also, use the paint on several walls and look at it in daylight and lamp light.

White Dove?

Lee lee, thank you, we love the window too! We use to have the rug centered with the window and the furniture sitting on it (it looked lovely), but we have it moved right now so that the kids have a soft spot to play :)

Ducktuck, I painted most of my house white last spring, and had a long angst ridden dilemma to help pick the colour. During the painting process (it took 3 weeks!) and after it was done, I found myself obsessing over the colour, seeing (in various rooms and different times if day) pink/blue/yellow undertones. Eventually I stopped staring and obsessing, and just sat back and enjoyed the fresh white canvas, against which my artwork and furniture looked really great.

Maybe you're looking too hard too? You just posted the one pic, but I think it looks pretty great! Of course it's hard to judge through pictures, but maybe you should give it some time before you decide you need to repaint.

Dove White. Did you try that one? or Classic Grey. Both by BM. It is also possible your simply white is appearing blueish next to the yellow wall and that once its all painted it wint have that blue tiny. Though i agrre it dies look blue in the pic

White paint is rather tricky as there are numerous shades of white. Since you are not satisfied with the color you selected, I would suggest picking three different options, and paint an area with Kilz to alleviate any surrounding color or color bleed through for new paint. You then you should select three different paint colors and paint them on the portion of the wall that you applied the Kilz. You can pan get a much truer representation of the actual color and be able to see it during different times of the day and at night without any sunlight. Paint is often tricky as it has a tendency to turn a slightly different color than the sample. Plus, our eyes are influenced by other colors surrounding the area. Hope this helps with your dilemma.

Thank you guys! Those are all very helpful ideas, including the one that I may just need to get use to it. I've always painted the walls colorful, and white is by far the most difficult color I have ever had to pick!

shiningautumn8, I have "Dove White" hung up as we speak. It's a lovely color. The problem is really that there are too many options and it makes me second guess myself. With so many choices it's easy to think that their must be a "perfect" color, so then there is a huge let down when the color is not perfect. If there were only three neutral whites to choose from, it would be so much easier!! How do I narrow it down

Btw,. You should probably paint the Kilz over all of your samples and only put up 3 - 4 samples of paint making certain they are not too close to each other. It sounds like you may be getting overwhelmed with so many color options at once. We use Sherwin Williams paint as the quality is great and we can rely on them to mix the paint properly. Their stores also usually have excellent service and they can help guide you when trying to figure out the base tone of the white. Try painting a square foot of each color instead of a small swatch, that will also help your eyes to see the true color, just make sure they are not very close to each other so your eye is not influenced by the other samples.
