Learn to love scraping paint and sanding.

Get as close to bare wood as possible. Seal the wood up with CPES, then alkyd primer, and acrylic top coat of your choice.

This approach with old growth wood will probably last just as long as a composite and look much better and less expensive as well as long as you only value your time at $5/an hour.

Oh, it will be big bucks to find wood trim to match what you have.

Try a real lumberyard. Or an architectural millwork store.

I'm not sure how one could tell the difference between cPVC trim and wood once you had a coat of paint on it, aside from the absence of peeling paint and rot on the cPVC. Trim made from new fast-growth trees has a lifespan measured in years rather than decades in New England, both due to the porosity of the wood and the sugar content that feeds the fungus.

For a historic structure where the integrity of the materials matters I'd seek out old growth wood from a recycler and have it milled to the required dimensions/profiles. and then aggressively stay on top of maintenance. Unfortunately even "real" lumberyards and millwork shops are mostly selling wood from rapidly grown tree farm trees that won't hold up.

For a non-museum quality house I'd just use the cPVC, carefully matching dimensions and profiles to the original.

Vintage Woodworks is well used by us old house owners. They carry a variety of interior/exterior trim styles and types of wood. I used them to replace removed trim from my old house and have been very happy with it. No, it is not old-growth, but it works for me.
