You're about 2 months late to be seeding for your neighborhood. Early August would be the time to be doing this job.

Is there a reason you don't want to spray the weeds? Weed-b-Gon or Weed-g-Gon Chickweed, Clover, and Oxalis Killer is what you need. You'll need it again in the spring when the new seeds germinate. You'll need to get it as it comes up to prevent new seed from dropping.

If you're going to use a preemergent in the spring, you need to get the grass seed down now and try to get as much germinated as possible. Fescue seed takes about 2 weeks to get 80% germination, so hurry up before the frost hits.

I delayed reseeding until now because it has been so hot up here. Nice and wet now. I have tried to use some of the weed killers but have had limited success, maybe because I started too late and then it had been so hot. Thanks for your helpful comments.

The reason: By the time most folks recognize its presence, the plants have already formed gillions of seeds.

Herbicide might kill the already aging/senescing plants but the seeds will survive, and thrive, the next season.

A dense lawn is a good remedy against weeds. Even though seeding now is a bit late, it can succeed if more than the usual amount of seed is used. You might need to seed again come spring planting time.

The people at Michigan State University who have spent much time and energy studying lawns will tell you that seeding the lawn in late summer, mid August, to mid September, is best. Prostrate and Spotted Spurges are annuals that grow seeds prolifically and will germinate and grow any where they can find some place. A dense and tall turf is the best defense against them.
