Bedroom wall help please

I am looking for something to go above the bed in my bedroom and for the wall around the chair/vanity area. I am looking for something unique - maybe something like white deer antlers or something 3-d above for above the bed and some kind of corner shelving above the chair I can accessorize?

I think you have too much in that room. I would remove the chair since it doesn't serve any purpose and it's just squished in the corner.
What do you have to the left of the bed? Is there a nightstand there? Would you be able to move the vanity there instead?

Above the bed you could have one piece if art, but I think it would be too much if you had that and those two frames to the right of the bed.

    I have some questions?

African feather headdress . Come in many colors. Need drapes and more color, bright or subtle, on the bed . Do you really need the vanity table. If not remove it and move dresser out of the corner. Keep chair.

    Rug and bedding looks skimpy.

I have some ideas for kind of re-doing your room. It has some nice things, like the cute chandelier, but there seems to be too much in the space making it feel really crowded. So, first, we need a design theme. I'm going for "shabby chic" type look because of your bedding and the chandelier so I will build on that. The two wood pieces, (chest of drawers and nite stand) need some "freshening". So I would get some white "chalk paint" from Hobby Store and paint those white. Doesn't have to be perfect, it will help bring a consistent look to your room. It looks like you actually use the make-up table, have you tried it beside your bed as a multi-purpose piece? If it fits, I would move to that side of the room. Then move the dresser to the left corner as you face the wall the dresser is on now. Keep it far enough away from the corner that your door there doesn't bang into it. Then move the chair to the right corner and get a big fluffy throw in white or cream to pull a softer look to the chair. Move the mirror currently over the make-up station to the your nightstand area but hang it lower.

That would open up your space quite a bit. Then take the two nice framed pieces currently hanging on the window wall and move them to the wall where your dresser is. Hang those in the center of the space from the new location of the dresser to the window wall. Above your bed, which was your original question! lol I would be very careful what I put there. It should be "soft", it should be non-threatening, it should be light and peaceful. There are some white feather wall hangings that might fill the bill perfectly. So, what have I done. I have turned the space into a white, light, peaceful retreat. If you could repurpose the dresser and current nite stand to another location in your home, that would open up this room. Generally, we tend to keep "stuff" we really don't use or need. Might try some "tiny house" thinking and go through everything in the dresser and make 3 piles. #1 - I use this all the time; #2, I use this seasonally, #I have not used this in the last year - a) bin to throw out b) bin to give away. You will be amazed at how much you don't keep! Hope these ideas give you some inspiration beyond your original question. I will hunt for the type thing I think would be good over your bed, if you must.

Thank you all so much! This is very helpful. I do use the vanity and I can't move the vanity to next to my bed because there's not enough space (even if the window weren't there, it'd be too small of a space bc of closet doors - see pics below). The room is 10'4" wide by 11'6" long. Do you need more measurements than that?

Flo Mangan, I would love to be able to paint the dresser and night stand and put cute new knobs on it but I don't even know where to start... I don't know what kind of paint, if I need to sand it down or prime it or anything, and I also live in a condo in a city without my own outdoor space... so it makes it tough to do! Think I could do it inside with a drop cloth? Maybe I can just bring a drawer to the paint store and ask them what I need to use...?

A drop cloth and paint with low VOCs would work.

I would also look for a bigger nightstand..same height or a bit lower, but wider

You could use annie sloan chalk paint to paint the dresser. No sanding, etc. Easy to paint and will totally transform the piece.

There are many wall medallions online :)

I agree remove the chair, add curtain panels and a medallion or round mirror above bed. No shelves or anything else on walls.

Chalk paint is your answer. Very little prep. Anne Sloan is one brand name but Hobby Lobby carries a similar product. Easy. A bit time consuming. Yes, but drop cloth down and that makes it safe. If you could do a different nite stand a mirrored one would be great.

What is width and length of bed? Height of vanity.

Is there another room you could watch tv in? I would make this long rectangle a lovely dining area, maybe two comfy chairs on either side of the fire place. Have the kitchen and beautiful doors to the yard be the heart of the home where people gather to talk and share not zone out in front of a tv.

Here are two options. Not sure of measurements of furniture, so Option 1 has a Double Bed size; and Option 2 has a Queen size bed. I guessed the chest of drawers to be 32"wide x 20"deep; and the vanity at 36"wide x 18" deep. Chair unknown, just used standard small chair. Nite stand I used is 26"wide x 20" deep. I note these measurements because on the drawing it is hard to see the numbers. I also guessed a roughly the size and placement of windows, but in any case, I think this could work better for you.m

I could see your dresser painted white with crystal knobs, so cute. Even your nite stand would work with white and crystal knob. Even if your dresser and vanity are a bit bigger I think this layout will still work. It keeps your closet doors so they open nicely. Your entry door might clash, but that is how it is now! Put a door stopper on the hinge and that will keep it from hitting your furniture on that wall. If you don't have the handy "sliders" to move furniture, highly advise investing in a set. They are pads that are typically round and some in a package for hard wood floors and some for carpet. You put one of these on a couple legs of what you want to move, or all, if you can reach them and slide the furniture easily! Great little invention. Available in U.S. at Lowes or Home Depot! If you try this, the pictures to the side of your bed, might work where they are. Send photos if you try this arrangement, or if my measurements are off, give me new numbers and I'll revise the layout.

I think you should hang the two pictures over the bed.

Yes, Karen D, we have made those suggestions and are working on layouts now. I wanted to add, mcklood, that the window can use a soft white filmy curtain to the floor so be a backdrop for the nite stand. In case you might want to do a different nite stand I will post a few options for you.

That one is size I put in the layout drawing. The picture makes the edges look gold but they aren't they are more silver in tone. There are some with more gold, but you could go either way, with the brass bed frame and whites, so you can mix the metals. Then pull together with a few accessories.

Maybe just put your art above bed and add curtains
  • 10 years ago
Chalk paint is easy to use. Almost no prep, and a slightly distressed look is great. The craft store brands work almost as well as the pricier Annie Sloan brand and I like the craft store wax even better than Annie's. Since your room is small, you might forget about decorative accents and upgrade your linens, including the bed skirt. Let that necessity do the decorating. There are lots of pretty ensembles in subtle gray and white prints. Add pale gray walls, white trim and furniture, and a single throw pillow in the plum of your chair. Yum.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could have the dresser/tv directly across from bed instead of in corner? I'd remove the chair (it's gorgeous--so just to another room) and scoot the dresser and vanity over--again I'd line dresser/tv up straight across from bed.

I would change the mirror that is over the vanity to sometning that is ornate. That would make your mirror the art and eliminate any need for further art.

I think the two art pieces to side of bed are enough. You walk in and see that art so I wouldn't distract from that w art above bed

Love idea of curtains and painting wood pieces. Night stand could even be painted the pink from some of your pillows or chair. Distressed is definitely best option for painting these items in this room.

Also having bed directly under chandelier in bedroom is nice. Thinking of a few ways to make that happen in this space. Lmk if you are interested and I can give ideas

Perhaps trying some of the things in our photos from our design portfolio will help you move forward? Notice the window treatments, ornate mirror, lamps on the bedside tables, and artwork over the bed.
