A few years ago, I collected spores from a fern I found at Seven Springs in Pennsylvania. Can't tell you much about the soil there except that it was a mountainside, very rocky, and there were a lot of Mayapples there. I got several plants from the spores, and planted a couple clumps last year in my backyard when they were a few inches tall. I have done this with other ferns, and they have grown great in that part of my yard. However, the Seven Springs ferns have really struggled. They made it through the winter, but one clump died, and the other is still just a couple inches tall. It is shady, clay soil, acidic, a good amount of organic matter, and well drained. I would really like to not lose these plants! Sorry I don't know the species, but can anyone suggest what other conditions I should try? If I move them into pots, what kind of potting mix? I got the young plants started from spores in peat moss.
