Dining room - help deciding on rug

I have been struggling to find a rug for our dining room and would love your input. The room is painted SW Mindful Gray and overall everything in the room is very neutral. I like to bring in other colors through accessories and table decor depending on season, etc. We eat in the dining room every night for dinner and occasionally for other meals when we have company. Based on past experience, I am looking for a flat weave or low pile rug - preferably wool, but I am open to other materials. I have been leaning towards rugs with a lighter color and simple patterns to keep the room from feeling too dark.

I found this rug recently, but have no experience with the brand "Mercury Row". Wayfair rug

I like the pattern and think the color would work well in the space. Thoughts on this rug?

Any other suggestions?

I also saw this one (and lots of others similar to this). Not sure if the color will be right / also worry it's too much pattern?

The first one is to much pattern and casual, the 2nd one more subtle and elegant.

I really like both rugs. Many people here suggest that when you are considering buying a big rug online that you should order the smallest version first. You will be able to check quality, color, pattern scale, weave, thickness, etc. and not have the hassle of possibly returning a large rug.

Have you checked out esale rugs? They have great prices and good customer service.

I don't think the first has too much pattern, most of it will be under the table, and it would add some visual interest to the room and compliment the entire area.

Those rugs seem just a bit too light in color to be under a dining room table. Might work if you don't used the room much and only invite careful adults.

I think the first one would work best in a more contemporary/minimaist setting -- and maybe under living room furniture at that. And it is far more casual than everything in your room now. The second one is a better look for your room, but the scale of the pattern would bother me if that is a picture of a larger rug. I'm guessing it is a smaller rug shown, but I think I'd want to make sure by either seeing a larger rug or ordering a small one as suggested.

Something else I would consider is that you have no color in the room other than grey. The rug would be a place to introduce some color -- even soft and sublte colors. There is also a practical reason to have more color in a DR rug - more color and pattern variations help minimize any marks left by spills or drops. You would also open up a lot more choices.

Thinking if you're eating in that room daily, a wool rug might be a pain to keep clean - just my opinion, tho.

FWIW, I love the outdoor rugs I found on sale @ Target. They're a flat weave polypropylene that you can hose down, if necessary. So far it hasn't been necessary, but I regularly steam mop them & several spot stains came up easily. Food doesn't seem to stick @ all.

Of course I have pads under them. They're in my main living space in high traffic areas. They look like wool & come in contemporary designs.

With a long haired cat, 3 lively grandkids & a sloppy hubby, who likes to eat on the couch, I needed something hard wearing & easily cleanable.

    Here's link:

    FWIW, YMMV

The geometric motifs are very strong in that room with the triangular/diamond-shaped chair backs and stacked rectangles of the lamp, so I'd avoid another strong geometric. Both rug choices repeat the diamond motif. I'd look for a more flowing pattern and a little color, which I think would help tie the traditional chandelier in better too. Right now it looks like the odd man out.

Good quality wool actually repels soil and spills better than many other materials.

When I needed some information for cleaning my wool rugs, I found the Rug Chick blog which I've found helpful. This is her post on synthetic/polypropylene rugs,

esalerugs and ecarpetgallery seem to have a good selection of well-priced wool rugs.

Kcorn, if any of your family or friends drink grape juice or red wine, or enjoy any tomato-based foods, I'd steer clear of anything too light-colored or pale.

You have a gorgeous room with a beautiful wall color. It may be that you really like very monochromatic designs, but something a little more daring that takes you out of your comfort zone may not be a bad thing. I'm going to show you my rug from esalerugs which is made of polypropylene which is easy to clean and not expensive. It's also flat. Of course this company also has lots of other designs and you can return the rug if you don't like it without having to pay shipping.

    Looks very nice!

I love the generous size, too. Looks like it was made for your room!

Even though I am not a fan of gray and love color, I like the rug and think it gives the room serenity. I could see a pretty red-orange bowl on the side board.

I'm sorry to say that I liked the room better without this rug. To me it makes the room look bland and predictable. I think a rug with more character and color would make your beautiful room much more exciting.

I can see where ingrid is coming from — as you have a very monochromatic style in this room, a rug with pattern/color could work really well here. That being said, I like the choice you made. I especially like the size. And to get it on sale — kudos to you. To perk things up a bit, perhaps you could add in some colorful artwork? And even though you didn't ask about anything else in the room, a really funky light fixture would be awesome. (not that there's anything wrong with what you have there — it's just very "safe", is all)

Overall, I think the room is very pretty.

I love the size and how the rug enhances your choice of decor. Classy!

I'm with ingrid on this, plus jute does not wear well at all.

I don't mind the look but it's a very casual rug in a not very casual room. I personally can not stand the feel of those rugs . The only place I had one was in the back entrance way to catch dirt from shoes and boots etc. I do like the size of the rug. Going from your original post you wanted to introduce color that one doesn't do that however if you have decided you like it that's what matters, go with what you like !

Ingrid, what is the rug you have in your room? It is very pretty and I am looking for something like that . Thanks!

Thank you, Rekha. It's from esalerugs, and this is the second carpet I've bought from them. It's a great company in that if you don't like a rug you can return it without having to pay return postage. It's made of polypropylene which is not that expensive but it wears well and is easy to clean. The number of my rug is 33131856. If you want a different one, the fastest way to find what you want is to choose Traditional, the color red (if it has even the tiniest bit of red it will be shown) and then material (wool, polypropylene, etc.). I hope you find a rug you like there; they have a large selection.

I like the look of the rug, I only question how long it's going to look nice and clean. To me the look is quite polished such as a man wearing a suit as opposed to wearing jeans. :) I don't see an Oriental like Ingrid's looking all that great in this room. Someone want to do a mock up?

The new rug looks fine but too bland for my taste. However I always have rugs with color and pattern and something that doesn't show every little spill and slop, especially in a dining room.

I would turn the mirror in the niche. I like your rug selection. I'm not fond of table runners

I have this rug but in the blue. After I bought it another poster bought the dark gray and cream version. It looked so beautiful in her space and bright as well. The cream is very dominant in this rug. I think it would compliment the sophisticated style you have in your dining room better than the casual rug you have now.

I found the picture of the gardenweb poster who got the above rug.

    Another contender.

Couldn't get the full rug in the picture.

So much depends on your style. I like a calm, soothing almost monochromatic room. I don't care for bright colors or pops of color as some here like. I also don't consider monochromatic as being bland. What I'm trying to say is I like the rug in your room. My only concern is the feel and maintenance of the rug if something is spilled on it.
