How was the light color of the ceiling and beams achieved?

We have a deck house (circa 1979), and the ceiling is much darker, and the beams are very dark brown--all of which makes the house dark. Most pictures I see of deck houses are similar to ours. We don't want to paint and give up the wood, but I would love for them to be a lighter tone, like this! Maybe it's just a different kind of wood--not sure if there is anything we could do or not...

    Hi Ellen,

    Thank you
for your question! Your ceiling and the ceiling you see in this photo likely
both use cedar decking. Generally, from 1959-2009 all of the cedar T&G decking had
a clear finish. Some Deck Houses from 1994-current have a Ponderosa
Pine with a white wash finish on them instead. If the decking in your home had
anything other than clear stain over cedar, then it was a stain put on by a previous owner or builder. The owners of the Deck House in this photo chose to use a light stain.

    You can
certainly paint the decking a lighter color; however, you are right that you
will lose the natural look (which may be a feature that future buyers look for in a Deck House). We recommend calling a paint and stain professional to
find out if it would be possible for you to strip and re-stain the decking in
your ceiling. Please call us at 800.727.3325 and we would be happy to provide
you with our PPG Coatings representative’s contact information.

We have a deck house, circa 1980. The original owner pickled the ceilings. The wood grain, knots, etc show through beautifully, but the ceilings throughout the house are light and bright. I actually think the house is more marketable, as result.
